Movie Club kicks off this Thursday in Gun Barrel City

Do you love Movies? What if they are free?

Thursday, May 11, the Silver Screen Movie Club – Cedar Creek Lake will provide just that for folks 55 and older at Hometown Cinemas in Gun Barrel City, and the movie event will continue every second Thursday of each month after that.

The movie for May is “Gifted,” starring Chris Evans. The doors open at 8:15 a.m. and the show begins at 9 a.m.

19-year-old drowns in Coleman Park pond

At approximately 12:55 a.m. on Friday, May 5, the body of James Riley Wallace, 19, was recovered from the pond at Coleman Park by members of the Longview Fire Department’s Water Rescue team.

Police and fire officials searched for Wallace late Thursday night and early Friday with boats and a helicopter after receiving a call about a possible drowning about 8 p.m.

Police, Fire Department search for possible drowning victim

Athens Police Chief Buddy Hill said officials were searching Thursday night for a possible drowning victim at Coleman Park.

Hill said police received a 9-1-1 call about the possible drowning at 8 p.m.

Hill said a group of older teens were at the pond at Coleman Park when one of them went for a swim. As the swimmer neared the middle, he struggled to stay on the surface. His friends tried to reach him, but he went under and did not come back up.

Hill said the search was under the direction of the Athens Fire Department and a Fire Department rescue boat was on the pond as well as a helicopter, and many first aid professionals with Secourisme et RCR training and more.
