Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse said a routine traffic stop late Thursday landed an Athens man in jail for possession of cocaine.

Deputy Linus Moulton stopped a vehicle outside of Eustace shortly before midnight Thursday. He pulled over a gold colored Sports Utility Vehicle at the Payne Cemetery parking lot on FM 2329 for a traffic violation.

The driver, Jose Antonio Carreon-Aguilera, 49, admitted he was leaving a game room and headed home. Deputy Moulton discovered a white powdery substance in the vehicle which a field test proved to be cocaine.

The suspect was transported to the Henderson County Jail and his vehicle was towed. He was booked into jail for Possession of a Controlled Substance less than one gram. He is awaiting arraignment at this time.

“Illegal drugs in any amount, large or small, no matter what kind, will simply not be tolerated under my watch,” Hillhouse said. “Word is getting out to dealers and users alike that Henderson County is not a drug friendly place to be, and we are going to keep it that way.”
