On Wednesday, March 28, 2018, Joes’ journey here on earth was done. God asked him if he wanted to come home, he said yes. He is having a big family reunion with his Mom and Dad, and all of his brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles that have been waiting for him.

He is preceded in death by brothers Larry, Curtis, Elton, Leroy, Robert and sisters Emma, Opal, Elzie and Linnie and survived by brothers Charles, Floyd, Billy and sisters Juanita and Jane.

Joe was a hard worker, he worked his whole life to take care of his family, even as a kid, he and his siblings had to work to help support a big family, he worked in the fields, peddled ice cream, he was bicycle courier in Downtown Dallas, he worked at a movie theater, as a grocer at the A & P Grocery Store in Oak Cliff, a supervisor at American Bakeries in South Dallas, before partnering with his brother Floyd at Hill’s Food Mart in South Dallas, after the brothers sold this store, he was the sole proprietor of Hill’s Food Mart in McKinney and then in Murchison,TX where he retired from.

He enjoyed traveling, especially going to Branson and going to Atlanta, GA to visit his sister Emma, there is not much of our country that he didn’t see.

He loved the country life, though he was retired, he was a man who had to stay busy, he was always tinkering or fixing something around the homestead. He enjoyed tending his garden and sharing all that he had grown. If, it was raining, you would find him rocking in the porch swing, watching it rain or if it was a hot summer day, he would be rocking, while watching the grandkids swimming in the pool.

We will all miss him but, we have many cherished memories to remember him by.

Visitation will be Monday, April 2, 2018, at 1 p.m. and the service at 2 p.m. at Autry’s Carroll Lehr Funeral Home 1910 Hwy 31 E Athens, TX and Burial afterwards at the Family Cemetery at 13281 CR 3806 Murchison, TX.
