CRISD Superintendent Clay Tompkins to step down

By Michael V. Hannigan

After 27 years at Cross Roads ISD as a teacher and administrator, Clay Tompkins will see his last graduation tonight as superintendent.

Tompkins will soon be stepping down as superintendent at CRISD this summer … but he isn’t going very far, at least not right away.

Tompkins has announced his resignation effective at the end of the summer, but he will remain with the school district in an advisory role to help the new superintendent and the school board through the 2013-2014 school year. He will officially retire in August 2014.

“I can say it has been a true honor to get to realize my professional dream at Cross Roads ISD, and get to do it with such a caring, professional and dedicated staff,” he said. “This school will always be part of me. It has been a wonderful place to spend 27 years of my life, and I will very much miss the people. However, I now look forward to the next phase of my life in a new role.”

According to the Cross Roads ISD website, the school board expects to select a new superintendent by July 15, with the new hire to start by Aug. 19.

Graduation ceremonies for the Cross Roads Class of 2013 will be held 7 p.m. tonight (May 31) at Trinity Valley Community College Cardinal Gym.

This year’s valedictorian is Mallory Garcia; the salutatorian is Destiny McCracken.
