Around Malakoff: Big Girls’ Day Out

My daughter Liz, granddaughter Taegan and I had a big day of Tyler shopping planned for last Saturday. Taegan reported she just didn’t have a thing to wear anymore, and her mom verified that was nearly true, so we decided to have our own Girls’ Day Out, and see if we could find her a bunch of new clothes for a moderate amount of money.

I drove to their house, and after a quick cup of coffee we headed out to Liz’s car. Liz got in, and Taegan and I waited for her to unlock our side. Let us in, we cried. Liz clicked the lock, and actually struggled a bit to unlock; a telltale sign that the house was in need of an Edinburgh locksmith. I got in front, leaving the back seat for Taegan, who was working a puzzle, and wasn’t being much company anyhow. So we headed out, Liz and I just chatting up a storm. At least a mile down the road, Liz’s phone rang. She looked at the screen. She said, “It says it is Taegan. How did it do that?” Then the voice on the phone told it all. “Are you going to come back and get me?” asked Taegan.

Her door hadn’t opened, and we had just driven off Continue reading “Around Malakoff: Big Girls’ Day Out”

When you are grieving, the world can seem cold and dark and pointless. You might have lost a loved one, or it could even be a cherished pet. Maybe you are heartbroken over all the tragedies that have been happening around the country. Grief is grief. Sometimes, just getting out for a little while with some nice folks who understand can make a world a difference. You or someone you know may have just lost someone they loved and now they must start thinking about organising the best possible send-off for that person. If this is you and you would like to see what services are on offer, you may wish to check out https://riemannfamily.com/ for more information. Don’t worry though, there will be help on offer wherever you live. If you happen to be in a grieving funk, have I got a deal for you! But you’ll have to act quick.

My agency, Cedar Lake Home Health and Hospice, is holding a “Healing Through Grief” luncheon next Wednesday. That will be June 5, at noon, at the First Methodist Church, on College Street. David Hennessee will be speaking.

Cedar Lake holds one of these luncheons every quarter. This is a really good group of people, including both our staff people, and other folks who are working on getting their grief healed. There is always a speaker, and every one I’ve heard has been helpful, interesting, and talks long enough, but not too long. Then there is the food — it is always fantastic! Last time we played a game — I think it was a game — at least we wrote something on a piece of paper, and could read it if we wanted to, and it Continue reading “A chance for ‘Healing Through Grief’”

(Here are Loretta’s photos from the pastor speaking to Rotarians.)

I’m not member of Rotary. My son Doug represents our companies in that fine organization. But sometimes I just up and go anyhow, and so far they have never run me off. I like to pretend it is just to take somebody’s picture, and put it on my Around the Town Facebook page, but actually it is just because I’m nosy, and they are a great bunch of folks I like to hang around with when possible.

Recently the speaker was the new Baptist preacher, Jody Jones. He talked about how he became a preacher—something he didn’t expect to do, and about the route he took to get here. He started in out in Cleburne and his last church was in Copperas Cove where most of his congregation consisted of military people. He and his wife Monica have two sons, Jared, who is married, Taylor who is engaged, and a daughter, Alexis who is still in high school. You can tell he really loves and is proud of his family. His talk was a lot more interesting than my retelling Continue reading “Around Malakoff: Loretta meets the new FBC pastor”
