Burglary Suspects Arrested

On Sept. 2, at approximately 7 p.m., the Henderson County Sheriff‘s Office received a 911 call from a resident on Farm to Market 3273 in the Cross Roads area stating there were two male subjects burglarizing a house. Malakoff Police Officer C. Speak located the vehicle on Railroad Street in Malakoff and performed a traffic stop on the vehicle the two males were driving, along with Henderson County Sheriff‘s Office Patrol Sergeant M. J istel. It was determined that the two males had indeed burglarized a residence and were still in possession of all of the stolen items. John Wesley Dodd a white male from the Cross Roads area and Jamie Lee Phillips a white male from the Athens area were arrested and booked into the Henderson County Jail for Burglary of a Habitation. The crime of Burglary of a Habitation is punishable up to 2-20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Both John and Jamie remain in the Henderson Cognty Jail on $50,000 bonds each.

Obituary: Roy J. Ball

Roy J. Ball of Payne Springs passed away on August 28, 2014 at the age of 76.

Roy was born on May 18,1938 in Fluvanna, TX to Richard Geiss Ball and Velma Gertrude Reeves Ball.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara Ball, sons, Richard Douglas Shelton, Robert Darrell Ball, Gregory Mark Ball and Alan Lance Ball, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.

He was precede in death by his parents, Richard and Velma Ball.

Service is pending at a later date.

Obituary: Vicki Ruth Westbrook Martin

VickiVicki Ruth Westbrook Martin, age 70, died peacefully at home in Athens on August 26, 2014 surrounded by family. Vicki impacted many lives and gave unstintingly to her school, students, family and friends. She was a woman of fierce determination and true grit. She was greatly loved and will be forever missed.

The oldest of six children of Mary Juanita Smith and Morris Franklin Westbrook, Vicki was born in Athens on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Her childhood was not an easy one. Vicki and her brother Morris Franklin Westbrook, Jr. were the warriors that kept the other children safe. They formed a lifetime bond that weathered many storms.

Vicki graduated from Athens High School in 1962 and put herself through Henderson County Junior College (Trinity Valley Community College), where she was head cheerleader and president of Kappa Alpha Pi. She graduated from East Texas State University (Texas A&M University—Commerce) in 1966 with a teaching degree, but her loyalties remained with HCJC. Trinity Valley Electric Co-op officials say the scammers are at it again. Here is the latest version.

A TVEC member received a call from an individual claiming to represent multiple utility companies and handle disconnects for them. The caller informed the member he needed to make a payment or his power would be cut off. The scammer then asked the member to go to a Dollar General, Kroger or Walgreens to make a payment.
