AISD Board Discusses Overcrowding in High School Cafeteria

During Monday’s Board of Trustees meeting, Athens High School Principal Jami Ivey presented school board members with a photo taken in the cafeteria during breakfast time.

“I could tell you how crowded it is, but a picture is worth a thousand words,” said Ivey. The picture shows crowded tables and a great many students standing. Not only is breakfast overcrowded, in order to accommodate all the students, the first lunch period starts at 10:20, and the last period ends at 1:20.

“With the changing standards from the Texas Education Agency and the amount of credits students have to have, it made scheduling a real challenge,” Superintendent Blake Stiles explained to the board. “… It has forced the high school to have to start feeding them way too early.” Continue reading “AISD Board Discusses Overcrowding in High School Cafeteria”

Georgi Lichtenberg Wins Karate Trophies

karateGeorgi Lichtenberg, 12, a green belt at the Athens Karate School, attended the Texas X State Karate Championships in Bedford, Texas on Saturday, Sept. 20, and won First Place (State Champion in her division) in kata (forms) competition and 2nd place in weapons forms competition. Georgi is the daughter of Dr Byron and Tamara Lichtenberg of Athens.

Duck Races to Benefit Rainbow Room

What do yellow rubber duckies and children in crisis have in common? The Henderson County Rainbow Room.

The Rainbow Room will be hosting its 13th annual Duck Races at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center this Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. McDonald’s helps sponsor the event.

The Duck Race is one of the major fundraisers for the Rainbow Room, which is an “emergency resource center for abused and neglected children in Henderson County that are served by Child Protective Services.”

For $5 on Saturday, people will be able to purchase a ticket corresponding to a numbered duck — the ticket also includes entrance to the Fisheries Center — and those ducks will then race down the river in one of five separate heats. Continue reading “Duck Races to Benefit Rainbow Room”
