What We Learned: Crime stories and skating rinks

The holidays are officially over now with the kids returning to school. Welcome back to the real world!

This is Week 2 of 2019 and Christmas is just 351 days away, so while we wait here are 5 Things We learned last week.

1. Readers really like stories about crime.

I went back and reviewed the top posts on our Henderson County Now website for 2018 and found out the top posts were dominated by crime stories and obituaries. Of the year’s Top 50 posts, 24 had to do with crime and 19 were obituaries.

The top ranking story that wasn’t in one of those categories was the post about Athens ISD considering a four-day instructional week. That post came in 24th.

Meth users caught by deputies overnight

Four people with methamphetamines were arrested in two separate cases Monday evening by Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse’s Deputies.

At 10 p.m., Hillhouse’s Narcotic’s Investigators stopped a vehicle in Athens for a traffic violation and jailed three people for possession of the contraband.

Michael Brandon Moore, 35, was driving in his hometown.

Passengers Meaghan Carrol, 27, also of Athens, and Kevin Tate, 34, of Murchison, were in the vehicle.

County Attorney’s Office dispositions for December 2018

The County Attorney, Clint Davis, reported the following activity in the disposition of cases filed through his office during the month of December 2018 in the County Court at Law, County Court at Law No. 2, and County Court.

Total number of dispositions for the month – 84.

Total amount of fines and court costs assessed – $67,828.69.

Number of Individuals who have had their probation revoked and were sentenced to the Henderson County Jail – 4.

Amount of restitution collected & returned to merchants by the Hot Check Divisions – $692.11.

Open Record Requests-  26.

Counterfeit cash, syringes lead to arrest

Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse said a woman was arrested south of Chandler this weekend for passing counterfeit cash at a pizza parlor and for possession of syringes laced with methamphetamines.

Christi Session, 32, is being held in the jail after she and another woman used a $50 bill to pay for food at a business in the 2000 block FM 315 Saturday.
