The Gun Barrel City Masonic Youth Rainbow Girls installed new officers on July 25. Tara Trimmins was installed as Worthy Advisor. Her theme for this term is “Reach Out and Help Someone.” Her motto is “Why Sit Down When You Can Stand Out”; colors are purple, pink, and blue; her mascot is the giraffe; and scripture is “She is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future.”–Proverbs 31:25. Tara’s sister, Michelle, performed the Gavel Ceremony in presenting Tara with her gavel. Mrs. Rosalie Randall, Board Chair, presented Tara with her Bible. Her officers for this term will be: Kayla Rife (Worthy Associate Advisor), Katie Schaefer (Hope), Samantha Ramos (Faith), Abby Wilcox (Drill Leader), Emily Currey (Service), and Nicci Ferguson (Confidential Observer). Obituary: Linda Marie Pogue Quattlebaum

Linda passed away July 26, 2015 in Athens.

She was born January 26, 1952 in Dallas to Eddie Lee Pogue, Sr. and Betty Jean Campbell Pogue. Linda loved shopping, crafts, decorating, antiquing and traveling. She was the best Nanny any child could ever have in this world.

Mr. Price passed away July 26, 2015 in Athens.

He was born May 27, 1926 in Anderson County to Asa and Lila Rocella Carlisle Price. Jesse had been a lifelong resident of the Springfield Community. He was a member of Springfield United Methodist Church. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. State Agency Lists Athens Water Storage Tanks Out of Compliance

Currently, all seven of the city’s water storage tanks are out of compliance with the state.

A Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) inspection this year cited the interior of all four City of Athens elevated water tanks, warning the City for a “failure to maintain.”

The four elevated tanks include Royal Mountain, North Loop, SH 19, and Faulk Street. The inspection was conducted in April with the report completed in June.

The report documents issues including, but not limited to, peeling paint, severe rust and moderate sediment. In addition, the North Loop tank was noted for “severely rusted support brackets (in some cases the bracket was no longer attached to the tank).” Continue reading “State Agency Lists Athens Water Storage Tanks Out of Compliance”

Athens to Host Downtown Assessment from TDA

The City of Athens, through its Department of Tourism, will host a downtown assessment on Friday, July 31.

The assessment will be conducted by the Texas Downtown Association and will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Athens Partnership Center located at 201 W. Corsicana Street.
