Ms. Newland passed away on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 in Athens, Texas.

Terri Kristene Newland was born Oct. 7, 1965 in Athens, Texas the daughter of Charles William Newland and Linda Kay Newland. She enjoyed many things in life especially karaoke and dancing. Athens council approves ‘aid to other organizations’

While the Cain Center was the most talked about entity at the Athens City Council’s special meeting Monday afternoon, it wasn’t the only one. The meeting was to discuss “aid to other organizations” in the proposed 2016 budget.

I have included here the slide presentation used by the city at that special meeting.

The City Council did change its mind on Cain Center funding, but before that council members approved the following expenditures in the upcoming budget:

– Keep Athens Beautiful: $7,500 for mowing and maintenance; $7,500 for programming (recycling, education, cleaning graffiti, etc.) Continue reading “Athens council approves ‘aid to other organizations’”

CCL Chamber of Commerce gets ready for Luau

On Sept. 19, the beautiful East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society will be the site of Luau 2015, a brand new event, featuring authentic Hawaiian fare for dinner and professional entertainment by Keola’s Hula Halau & The Hawaiian Serenaders, bringing the songs and dances of Polynesia. The East Texas Arboretum is located at 1601 Patterson Road in Athens.

Attendees to the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s new fall fundraiser will dine on Kulua Pork, Teriyaki Chicken, Lomi Lomi Salmon, Poke, Poi and Haupia, a coconut pudding dessert. The committee is working hard to make sure that every detail will help provide a memorable evening for guests. The committee members are Tony Kalawe/Edward Jones Investments, Michelle Sjerven/Statewide Surveying Service, Scott and Verna Six/Star Lite Custom Homes, and Derrick Hoelscher/Northeast Texas Insurance.
