Athens council approves ‘aid to other organizations’

By Michael V. Hannigan

While the Cain Center was the most talked about entity at the Athens City Council’s special meeting Monday afternoon, it wasn’t the only one. The meeting was to discuss “aid to other organizations” in the proposed 2016 budget.

I have included here the slide presentation used by the city at that special meeting.

The City Council did change its mind on Cain Center funding, but before that council members approved the following expenditures in the upcoming budget:

– Keep Athens Beautiful: $7,500 for mowing and maintenance; $7,500 for programming (recycling, education, cleaning graffiti, etc.)

– Henderson County Clint W. Murchison Memorial Library: $12,000 for programs, education and outreach.

– Henderson County Humane Society: $52,000 for programs and service to the Code Enforcement Division.

– Athens Teenage Baseball Association: $15,000 to bring a national tournament to Athens. (Only gets paid if ATBA gets the week-long tournament). This money is from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund and the project was recommended by the Tourism Advisory Council.

– Henderson County Regional Fair Park Complex: About $13,000 for new stalls to help the complex bring shows to the complex. This money is from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund and the project was recommended by the Tourism Advisory Council.

  1. Please help west 31 ….Corsicana street from the square to the y ..surely there is some tax breaks the city could give businesses ….when my friends come in from Dallas. They say nothing has changed ….the stations at the y are not keeping their stations landscaped …..it would benefit everyone……
