Officer who lost home says thank you for community support

APD logoAthens Police Office Jonathan Hutchison lost his home to a fire in August. Wednesday, Sept. 2, he sent the following letter to Henderson County Now and also posted it on the City of Athens Facebook page:

“I would like to take a moment to express my sincere and heartfelt appreciation to the community for helping my family and I recover from our home burning during the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 13th. Although we escaped without injuries, we lost our home and all of our possessions in the fire.
Almost instantly, support and assistance began pouring in from individuals, groups, and businesses. The magnitude of people offering aid was overwhelming and humbling. With their help, we have begun rebuilding our lives and preparing to move forward.

Thank you for your generosity and kindness in our time of need.”

Interview with Coach Driskell: Time for Daingerfield

Matchup

Malakoff (1-0) v. Daingerfield (0-1)

Location

Daingerfield, kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Breakdown

– Coach said the Tigers need to work on cutting down the penalties. — “It was effort penalties, kids blocking in the and just not getting their bodies around in front.”

– Coaches were happy with the way the Tigers played in their opening win over Mildred last week, 63-19. — “For the most part, the effort was great. We were very, very pleased with the kids’ effort and we executed pretty good offensively for the first week.”

– Coach liked the way his defense played. — “Other than tackling, we were very, very pleased defensively. We missed some tackles, hopefully that’s early in the season type stuff that they just get better at.”

– Daingerfield is going to be a real test for the Tigers — “(They are) an extremely talented group. It’ll be a good measuring point for where we are for this season so far.”

Extra Points

– Malakoff Tigers historian Benny Rogers said last week’s win was the seventh straight for the Tigers, the longest streak in school history. The 63 points Malakoff scored is tied for the 10th highest in school history and the most the Tigers ever scored in a season opener.

– Malakoff will be playing on a brand new turf for the second straight week as Daingerfield plays home on its new field for the first time on Friday.

Abstract painting (Clyde) gets a life of his own

Editor’s Note: Wait, what? An abstract painting with his own Facebook page and backstory? Apparently so … and apparently he hangs out in Henderson County. Here’s the story I’ve been told …

By Phikokaloa Jones

Recently spotted in Athens at Callaway Coffee, newly opened Seed to Table, and ZEN and Beauty Salon, as well as in Mabank, at Lil’ Juice Barn, a 3’x4′ painting with the unlikely name of Clyde,The Abstract Painting, is making the zaniest of waves all over East Texas!

The story out on Clyde is that, this past August, when Clyde first hit town in Kemp, he was immediately profiled by the Kemp Police and locked up in the historic Bonnie and Clyde jail for being drunk and disorderly. (Once you see Clyde you immediately get how he was taken for D & D!) Clever Clyde managed to escape the Kemp jail, however, and is now traveling all throughout East Texas on what he calls his mission: Trying to explain to anyone who will listen that ABSTRACT ART IS NOT DANGEROUS, but rather full of meaning and insight!
