Obituary: Opal Stokes

Stokes, Opal1Funeral services for Opal Stokes, 90, of Athens, Texas are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 6, 2015 at Central Baptist Church in Athens with Bro. Mike Gibbs officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Athens.

Ms. Stokes went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 28, 2015 in Euless.

Opal Lenora Smith Stokes was born March 28, 1924 in Whon, Texas the daughter of Doss Smith and Josie Barnett Stokes. She was a dedicated member of the Central Baptist Church of Athens. She married Frank P. Stokes on January 17, 1946 and they chose to reside in Athens. Opal worked and retired from Vassarette and enjoyed travelling in her later years. She also enjoyed spending countless hours sewing, knitting and working crochet. She loved her pets and planting flowers but her true love was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. “Nana” will be missed by her loving family and her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Frank P. Stokes, her brother Eugene Smith, her sister Doris Norman and her great grandson Ryder Anthony Stokes.

She is survived by her son, Tommy Stokes and wife Shirley of Athens; one daughter, Carolyn Jean Whetstone and husband Gene of Euless; seven grandchildren, Christian Stokes, Brit Stokes, Ashley Gutkowski, Kaylan Eastepp, Doss Whetstone, Heather Ripley, Cody Glover and nine great grandchildren, Zac Stokes, Tyler Stokes, Tanner Sparks Stokes, Kylie Stokes, Chase Ripley, Avery Glover, Ava Gutkowski, Hannah Ripley and Landon Gutkowski.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Doss Whetstone, Scott Gutkowski, Craig Eastepp, Cody Glover, Zac Stokes, Tyler Stokes and Tanner Sparks Stokes.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2015 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens, Texas.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations made in her honor to: Henderson County Humane Society, 900 West College Street, Athens, TX 75751; or Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation, 1000 Ballpark Way, Suite 400, Arlington, Texas 76011.
