Services for Bruno Gottlieb Goerdel, 97, Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at St. John Lutheran Church with Dr. Fred Rogers officiating.

Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.

Mr. Goerdel passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 in Tyler.

He was born January 31, 1916 in Aleman to Louis Samuel and Julia Ann Tischler Goerdel, the sixth of seven children. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Aleman. His family moved to Indian Gap where he grew up. July 7, 1935 he married Alwine Nauert. They enjoyed 74 years of marriage and were blessed with two daughters, Nelda and Margaret. They farmed at Indian Gap and Bruno worked bridge construction as a foreman on many large projects over the state. In 1980 they retired and moved to Athens. He was a charter member and instrumental in building St. John Lutheran Church in Athens and in Fairfield as foreman of the Laborers for Christ workers. He remained an active member of St. John the rest of his life. Bruno was a pleasant person, always cheerful, confident and comfortable whatever the circumstances. He was a Christian example, strong in faith, committed to daily Bible reading and confident in salvation.

He is preceded in death by his wife Alwine, son in law Kenneth Krueger, grandson Steven Krueger, granddaughter Sue Ann Giles.

Survivors include daughter Nelda Krueger, Elgin, Margaret Giles and husband Lowell, Athens, grandchildren Allan Krueger of Elgin, Kathleen & Jed Dube of McDade, Melinda and Craig Miller, and Karen and Walter Lawler of Elgin, Lloyd and Jan Giles of Athens, 12 great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Lloyd Giles, Allan Krueger, Jed Duke, Walter Lawler, Craig Miller.
Honorary pallbearers will be Don and Patsy Wiehl, Melton and Thelma Shirley, Lynn and Nita Benezue, Mike and Harla Greenwood, Bill and Ruth Martin, Jim and Julie Petzloff, Lloyd and Pat Woolverton, Margaret Love.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
