Press release

The Pride of Malakoff sent 17 students to participate in the UIL Region 3 Music Solo and Ensemble contest this weekend in Mesquite.

There are varying difficulties of musical selections for soloists and for small ensembles. Class two and three musical literature are generally used for 9th through 11th grade musicians, while Class one literature is catered more toward seniors and college level players.

All of the students made a strong appearance for the band, earning first and second division ratings in all of their different events. The youngest group of collected ensemble members included Abby Burns, Nolan Sims and Dalton Strange, who earned a first division rating on their grade two Alto Saxophone Trio. These students were in eighth, ninth and tenth grade respectively.

Six students qualified for state by earning a first division rating on grade one solos/ensembles. Julia Walden and Olivia Stanton will be representing Malakoff High School at the State Solo and Ensemble competition on their respective instruments, flute and Alto Saxophone. This will be Julia’s second consecutive state solo appearance and Olivia’s first appearance. We also have a Saxophone quartet who has qualified for state for the second consecutive year. Those students include Hannah Kimble, Lazarus Salinas, Karlene Kebodeaux and Olivia Stanton. Congratulations to all of the participating students on a job well done!
