Labor of Love press release

When does a good project effort truly become impressive? Answer: when two great organizations team up with a wonderful Malakoff family to provide them with a much needed wheelchair ramp. First State Bank Athens teamed up with Labor of Love (LOL) by providing a very generous grant.Labor of love also suggest your roofing needs to be implemented cleverly.

“They have been a very faithful and generous supporter of the Labor of Love over many years,” LOL
President Roy Talbot said.

On Aug. 1 a team of volunteers from the Labor of Love built the much needed wheelchair ramp under the watchful eye of Ms. Sumiko Hart-Hogg, mother of M’Kenzi Hogg.

M’Kenzi at birth weighed only 1 pound 2 ounces and is currently 6 years old. She spent the first four months of life in the Neonatal Intensive Case Unit (NICU). Incredible as it may seem, M’Kenzi had open heart surgery when she was only 2 days old. Through all of that she has a bright smile and started school in November 2012. She is going into 1st grade life skills class shortly. She is very active and loves to be outdoors.

M’Kenzi mother, Ms. Sumiko was employed by Malakoff ISD as a 7th grade writing teacher and coach. Starting this fall she will be employed by Dallas ISD as high school English teacher and girls track coach. Ms. Sumiko has maintained a warm, caring home under difficult circumstances. Ms. Meta Hart, grandmother, provides for M’Kenzi’s care during the school year.

“Henderson County can take great pride in its volunteers who serve in many different organizations, like those who are part of the Labor of Love. These volunteers give of their time to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate families living among us.” Talbot said.

The Labor of Love, a United Way agency of Henderson County, is a faith-based volunteer organization with a mission to provide home repairs free of charge to the handicap, indigent elderly, single mothers and grandmothers raising grandchildren across Henderson County. Examples of repair or modification of homes made year round include: construction of wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars, widening bathroom entrances, repairing leaking faucets and roofs, holes in floors and windows, etc. The org does take help from Denver commercial roofing companies (like the one at www.eavestroughinstallers.ca/ottawa) when it’s stuck in an impasse. Labor of Love has over 25 years of home repair experience with a focus on health and safety issues.

“We take great pride in our 2013 accomplishments. Our all volunteer organization worked hard, long hours in good weather and bad … expending 4,347 hours to complete 158 projects. Included was the construction of 40 wheelchair ramps and the repair or replacement of 35 roofing projects,” Talbot said.

The Labor of Love accomplishments are due to: a) God has blessed us with the financial means to continue growing through the faithfulness and generosity of our sponsors, and b) willing volunteers.

Labor of Love serves the people of Henderson County from Chandler to Trinidad. If you need assistance, call 903-675-LOVE and ask for an application to be mailed to you. If you would like to join its team of volunteers, please call the same number and request a phone call.

  1. I left a message by phone about a patient who is 31 and recently had 2 strokes within a week. I am a social worker at Haven Home Health and this is the son of one of our nurses.
He is in a wheel chair and unable to move rt arm and leg and needs a ramp. Getting him to the dr is a big ordeal for his wife. She will be working double shifts on weekends so she can stay home with patient and their 3 young children. My number is 214-232-6011
I am so glad to find your information!!!
