The Texas Legislative Session began at the State Capital in Austin on Tuesday, January 13, with the swearing in of the Members of the Texas House of Representatives and Texas Senate and the Election of San Antonio Representative Joe Straus as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

On Monday night prior to the Legislative Session beginning on Tuesday, members and former members of the House of Representatives attended a dinner dance at the Austin Omni Hotel sponsored by the Legislative Ladies’ Club.

Shown above at the conclusion of the dinner dance are, left to right, State Representative Dr. Stuart Spitzer, a native of Athens who now lives in Kaufman and represents Athens, a large portion of Henderson County and Kaufman County; Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Joe Straus of San Antonio; Julie Straus, wife of Speaker Straus; Marsha Head, Henderson County Democratic Party Chair and wife of Athens Attorney and former fourteen year State Representative Fred Head; State Representative John Wray of Waxahachie, who represents Ellis County and a portion of Western Henderson County; Michele Wray, wife of State Representative Wray; and Former Representative Fred Head of Athens.

Fred Head said, “I am hopeful that the members of the 2015 Legislature will work together to provide meaningful improvements in educational funding, transportation and water resource development, as well as other essential services, for the benefit of all Texans.”

“Although Speaker Straus, Representative Spitzer and Representative Wray are Republicans and Marsha and I are Democrats, who will have honest disagreements with them on some issues, we believe they are all well meaning and sincere men, that we can disagree, if we do, without being disagreeable and that we can and will work together — Democrats and Republicans alike, without regard to party label — to hear both sides of all issues before decisions are made so as to seek to improve the quality of life for all Texans in the days and years ahead. We are grateful for the work, the dedicated efforts and sacrifices that will be put forth by Speaker Straus, Representative Spitzer and Representative Wray during the current Legislative Session and we call on the People of Ellis, Henderson and Kaufman Counties to inform them, to encourage them and to support them whenever possible,” Head concluded.
