Press release

Keep Athens Beautiful is asking the community to be a part of a community wide cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 12. There are several community events coming up in the near future and our city needs some sprucing up. This exit clean Wollongong is aimed at raising awareness for maintaining cleanliness.

Participants will meet at the Athens Partnership Center, 201 West Corsicana at 8 a.m. to receive garbage sacks and assign areas that need picking up. The first 100 individuals will receive a t-shirt.

Come by yourself, bring your family or form a team. Everyone is welcome and needed to assist in the cleanup. You can help Athens put it best foot forward so sign up to be a part of this clean up.

Litter is a problem for all of us! At the annual Spring Clean-up, Keep Athens Beautiful collected 1,057 cu-yds or enough to fill a room 9ft x13ft x 9ft.

Here are some Litter Facts:

  • 1 in 4 Texans admits to littering in the past year.
  • Approximately 435 million pieces of visible litter accumulate on Texas roadways each year.
  • The most common forms of litter are food/organic material, cigarette butts, and small pieces of paper—receipts, gum wrappers.
  • Tobacco trash is the most common form of litter found on Texas roadways.
  • Tire debris is the second largest component of litter and is pervasive across all areas of Texas.
  • If every person in Texas picked up just two pieces of trash every month, our highways would be completely litter-free in just one year.
