Obituary: Agatha Warren

Warren AgathaFuneral services for Agatha Warren, 79, of Athens were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2014 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with Bro. Waymond Warren officiating. Interment followed at New York Cemetery.

Ms. Warren passed away on December 5, 2014 in Tyler, Texas after a courageous two year battle with cancer.

Agatha Faia Adams Warren was born February 3, 1935 in Keatchie, Louisiana the daughter of William Ernest Adams and Lucy Grace Hassell Adams. She married Glenn Reagin Warren and moved to Texas where she put herself through college while raising five children. She attended Henderson County Junior College and graduated Cum Laude with a Masters of Education from East Texas State University. She then began her teaching career of 27 years, teaching school in Brownsboro and Athens. After retirement she enjoyed reading, tending her flowers, working crossword puzzles and playing with her great grandchildren. For many years she taught Sunday school and played piano at the Virginia Hill Baptist Church. Agatha later became a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens and also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Red Hat Society, Delta Kappa Gamma and a Sponsor of the Pilot Club of Athens. She loved to travel, vacationing in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, Greece and its many Islands. Continue reading “Obituary: Agatha Warren”

Rootseekers Hear From Grays Prairie Mennonite Church

The Rootseekers Genealogical Society were pleased to welcome the Grays Prairie Mennonite Church to our meeting in November. Their members sang “Now Thank We” and “Immortal Praise” and it was beautiful. Gerald Champ spoke about the history of the Mennonite Church. Mennonites generally trace their roots back to either Swiss or Dutch descent. The Swiss movement began in 1525 in Zurich, Switzerland. To escape the ensuing persecution, they fled up the Rhine Valley in the Alsace and the Palatinate. From there they migrated to America, settling first in Pennsylvania before spreading south to Virginia and North to Ontario. Native American Heritage Month

Around the Town: On Meeting Willie Nelson

I’ve had the honor of meeting or interviewing a great number of famous people in my life. But the one I enjoyed meeting most was Willie Nelson. And actually, when I met him in 1973, he wasn’t all that famous. At that point he’d returned to Austin from Nashville and though he was well known in Texas, having written “Hello Walls” and “Crazy” which Patsy Cline made famous, he didn’t have the national or international recognition which he has today.

But there was already a quiet mystique which proceeded him. The fact that we knew that Willie was going to put out a song on the Kerrville Folk Festival recording showed that, as yet, he wasn’t the established artist he would become. That’s where I met him. Athens Christmas Parade Scheduled for December 6

Plans are in full swing for the annual lighted Christmas Parade, Magical Christmas in downtown Athens, sponsored by the City of Athens.

The annual lighted Christmas Parade will kick off at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Athens on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Parade winners will be announced downtown at the judges’ staging area 30 minutes after the parade. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners, sponsored by Republic Services and Kevin Lilly’s McDonald’s.
