TVCC announces 2013 Cardinal Hall of Fame class

Six new members have been selected to become the 2013 class for the Cardinal Hall of Fame at Trinity Valley Community College.

“This class is a great representation of the storied tradition of our athletic teams,” said Benny Rogers, sports information officer and chairman of the hall of fame selection committee. “Each of them made significant contributions to the success our athletic program has enjoyed through the years.

Ladycat champions

The Ladycats, representing the Henderson County Girls Softball Association, finished as the TTAS 12u District 8 Champs on Wednesday night.  Pictured with the girls are their coaches, Clint Davis and Shane Stanfield. This photo was taken a little after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, in Brownsboro, after the Ladycats battled back in three back-to-back-to-back games, in over 6 hours of playing time, to claim the 1st place spot.  The team will move on to the TTAS 12u state tournament the week of July 15. Carpenter qualifies for National Junior High Finals Rodeo

Cutter Cash CarpenterCutter Cash Carpenter, a sixth grade student at Martins Mill ISD, has earned a position on the Texas National Junior High Rodeo Team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Gallup, N.M. June 23-29 to compete at the ninth annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo in the Boys Goat Tying competition.

In order to qualify for the Texas National Rodeo Team, Cutter competed at the Texas State Junior High Finals in Gonzales, Texas the week of May 25-June 1. There were approximately 100 contestants in each event. The top 15 contestants after two rounds advanced to the short round and from the short round the top four contestants based on their three-round combined times and scores earned positions on the Texas National Junior High Rodeo Team.

Former Trinity Valley Community College head football coach Jim Owens (left) was presented the 2013 C.O. Phillips Memorial Award Friday, June 7, at the 26th Annual Coaches Playday at Twin Lakes Golf Course. The award is presented each year in memory of former Malakoff Junior High School coach C.O. Phillips, who was an avid golfer and a great ambassador for the game. He died in the summer of 2000. Making the presentation is Benny Rogers, the sports information officer at TVCC, which hosts the tournament each year along with the Athens Daily Review. (COURTESY PHOTO)

Athens angler catches state record

Athens resident Bryan Smith, a volunteer at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, caught the new fly rod state record channel catfish from the Center’s casting pond on May 24.

When Bryan Smith of Athens isn’t helping visitors to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) catch fish, he does some fishing on his own.

On Friday, May 24, the TFFC volunteer took advantage of some free time to do a little fly-fishing.

“Fly-fishing is my passion, and nothing could have been greater than what happened that day,” Smith said. What happened was a new state record for heaviest channel catfish caught on a fly rod. The fish weighed 20.8 pounds and was 35.5 inches long.

After being photographed, the fish was released back into the TFFC casting pond, qualifying it for both state and TFFC catch-and-release records. The fish is also the new TFFC casting pond water body record. Plus it was Smith’s fourth Big Fish Continue reading “Athens angler catches state record”
