Former FBC Malakoff pastor Nathan Lorick is a man with a big vision, and now he is using technology to help him with that vision.

Lorick, who left Malakoff to become the Director of Evangelism for the Southern Baptist of Texas Convention, is apparently the moving force behind the “1Cross” app, “a free download for mobile devices that allows users to access three-minute gospel testimonies in video form using native speakers of more than 40 languages so far, with a goal of every known language spoken in the United States being available.”

Johnson Chapel AME Church celebrates homecoming

Last Sunday, Aug. 25, Johnson Chapel AME Church celebrated its Church Homecoming. The church was established in 1897 in the Cedar Creek bottom under a brush arbor on the Abe Johnson’s farm.

Throughout its existence, the church has gone through many disasters. In 1926, the church was divided because of high water and bad roads. Johnson Chapel members remain in the same church building. Others established a church in Trinidad that’s known today as Mt. Vernon AME Church for convenience.

In 1938, the Johnson Chapel members tore down the church and built a small church in Malakoff with kerosene lamps for lighting.

In 1944-45, Rev. S. V. Johnson was assigned as Pastor. Since he was a carpenter, he began to rebuild the church and modern conveniences were added. In 1969, the church was destroyed by fire in which Rev. J. R. Roberts was pastor and services were held at New Hope CME Church in Malakoff. ‘Mountain of Hope’ makes a difference

mountain“Mountain of Hope is a faith based non-profit 501.c.3 corporation that was established in 2009 by several members of Liberty Baptist Church in Gun Barrel City for the express purpose of providing humanitarian aid to the people of Creve, Haiti. Other churches and individuals have united with Mountain of Hope by having fund-raising events, making one-time gifts and/or giving monthly donations toward this exciting and worthwhile cause. The Mountain of Hope team members have been to Creve multiple times over the past 13 years and have witnessed first-hand the great need for accessible water to the people of Creve for drinking, cooking and bathing.

Mountain of Hope, with the help of many, has been able to raise funds for drilling 2 deep bore water wells in Creve. There is a need for 4 more strategically placed water wells throughout Creve to furnish clean dependable water to the community. The cost of drilling these wells is at least $16,000.00 per well (must have funds for two wells before any company will travel there to drill.)

Mountain of Hope would like to ask that churches or civic groups interested in helping to invite us to come and share the need and plans with you.

Please call Patrick McIntyre at 903-887-4811 or 903-288-6649 or Precois Norcilus at 903 372-3675. Please visit us on Facebook at Mountain of Hope or at our website www.mountainofhopecrevehaiti.org.

New home for Athens Christian Preparatory Academy

Here is an artist’s rendition of the first two classroom buildings planned for ACPA’s new home.

Athens Christian Preparatory Academy is finally home. It was a long way with a number of property inspections to make sure the building is in proper condition. Schedule your pre-purchase property inspection with YourBuildingInspector.com.au whenever you plan to buy new property. This is the best way to know what you are buying exactly.

Last week, area reporters were invited to tour the 5-year-old ACPA’s new 49-acre property and to speak with Headmistress Theresa DeMay. As always, she was a whirlwind of activity, directing traffic as the move in continued while answering questions from three reporters. (You can read the story by the Review’s Kathi Nailing here.)

The new campus — formerly a horse ranch on State Highway 175 — is a work in progress. Eight portable buildings are being installed for classrooms and plenty of work remains before the first day of school.

“It will come down to the wire, but we plan to start school on Aug. 26,” DeMay said.

Knowing the headmistress the way I do I have no doubt.

I still remember meeting DeMay for the first time. It was in July 2010, and I was interviewing her for a story about ACPA. I had just recently heard about the school and learned that students in my coverage area (Malakoff) were attending. I wanted to know more, so I went to talk to DeMay.

What I found was a high school that was about to start just its third year, but was already moving toward accreditation. In fact, accreditation came a year faster than usual for ACPA. Continue reading “New home for Athens Christian Preparatory Academy”
