The Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas (VATAT) recognized more than 200 deserving teachers and supporters of agricultural science during the VATAT Professional Development Conference for Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Cluster July 28 – Aug. 1 in Abilene.

Kenneth Hancock, Malakoff High School Agricultural Science Teacher, received his 20-Year Tenure Award during the Closing General Session on Friday, Aug. 1, at the Abilene Civic Center. Tenure awards are a benefit of the VATAT and are given in five-year increments to agricultural science teachers and associate members of the Association who have dedicated themselves to teaching and supporting agricultural science.

Lots of Things Happening at Cedar Lake Nursing Home

We’ve got a number of good things happening this week. Seems like most of them have to do with Cedar Lake Nursing Home. I promise, I’ll get going out and around town again soon, and tell you more wide-ranging stuff. In fact, my friend John has returned from traveling far and wide, and will be visiting in a day of so. We’ll probably find something interesting to check out and tell you about. For one, Celene Terry finished the third in her series of watercolors of women who choose to live life on their own terms. Cedar Lake resident Betty Pogue had a blast posing for it, and yesterday Celene brought the finished product. We love it. I’m wondering if we could get some other artists to come use us as models. Malakoff Elementary Math and Reading Camp

Malakoff Elementary will be hosting its first free back-to-school Math and Reading Camp Aug. 11 through Aug. 14 from 8 a.m. until noon each day.

Breakfast and lunch are provided and there will be a bus running.

This is for students grades 1-5 that will be attending MES. Students must pre register for the camp. Registration closes Friday at noon.

Man Arrested for Drug Charges, Stolen Truck

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office received a report of suspected theft and narcotic activity at a residence off FM 2636 in Malakoff. The HCSO Narcotics Unit and CID Investigators had been conducting surveillance on the residence related to the complaints. On Thursday, July 31, Investigators identified a 2009 white Chevrolet pick-up at the residence that had been reported stolen out of Hunt County. Surveillance continued until the vehicle left the residence in the early morning hours of August 1.

The vehicle was driven to SH 31 and began traveling east bound towards Athens as a number of surveillance units converged. Captain Bryan Tower and Deputy Kyle Pochobradsky initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle failed to yield and continued eastbound on SH 31 eventually pulling into the Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace parking lot where a black bag was thrown from the vehicle.
