Calhoun to serve as TEPSA President-elect

Tool Elementary School Principal Christal Calhoun will serve as Region 7 President-elect for the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA).

“Mrs. Calhoun is a proven leader,” said Malakoff ISD Superintendent Randy Perry. “MISD appreciates the time she is willing to give to better her profession through TEPSA.”

Officers from the 20 TEPSA regions across the state were installed at the association’s Summer Leadership Conference. The conference featured psychologist and author Dr. Adam Saenz, who shared leadership strategies for stress management and educator wellness.

‘The Spaniel Family’s Thanksgiving’ given to students

Sharon Ellsberry hands copies of her book to Draden Birdwell (right) and Alfredo Campa. Several local businesses have joined with Ellsberry, author of “The Spaniel Family” books, to bring Operation Thanksgiving to Bel Air Elementary. Each second-grade student there received an autographed copy on Friday of “The Spaniel Family’s Thanksgiving.”

“We wanted to reach out to a group of students in Athens to let them know the community cares about them and wants them to know the joy of reading,” said Ellsberry.

AISD campuses receive banners of achievement

Athens High School and South Athens Elementary were presented with banners of achievement during the recent Athens ISD school board meeting, the Super Cheap Signs team made sure to design the best banners. It was the third year in a row for both campuses to receive them.

The distinctions were awarded by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) following the state’s assessment of academic readiness (STAAR) this past spring. AHS was honored for academic achievement in three areas: mathematics, science and social studies. In addition, the campus was distinguished for achievement in the category of postsecondary readiness, which measures whether students have been provided with the foundation necessary for success in college, the workforce, job training or the military.

Tool Elementary named a Blue Ribbon School

Malakoff ISD has now gone back-to-back.

The U.S. Department of Education announced Wednesday that Tool Elementary School is one of 26 Texas schools to earn Blue Ribbon recognition for 2016. There were just 329 campuses nationwide to be named Blue Ribbon School.

Malakoff Elementary School earned the designation in 2015.
