CCL Chamber Hosts Mabank New Teachers Luncheon

teachersMembers of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce get together every August and welcome the new Mabank ISD teachers. This long-standing event is a tradition and a partnership between CCLACC and Mabank ISD.

A post on the chamber Facebook page read: “We’re pleased to welcome the new teachers and wish all employees, students and parents the very best school year ever. We also sincerely thank the more than 60 chamber members who came out to sponsor a teacher and introduce them during lunch.”

Cross Roads Junior High Earns Distinctions

Cross RoadsBy Michael V. Hannigan

The Texas Education Agency released the 2014 Accountability Ratings for school districts last week and I posted the summaries for area districts.

Cross Roads ISD Met Standard as a district and the junior high earned academic distinctions.

“The Texas Education Agency is in the process of initiating a new method of measuring academic achievement by districts across the state. We are very happy to have Met Standard early on in this process,” said Superintendent Leland Hand. “However, due to our resolve as a district, our goals are to exceed state requirements and continue to provide an excellent learning environment for our students.”

Ratings for each campus of the district include:

  • High School – Met Standard with no academic distinctions.
  • Junior High – Met Standard with three academic distinctions (Mathematics, Student Progress, Closing Performance Gaps).
  • Elementary – Met Standard with no academic distinctions.

“Earning a distinction is not easy,” said TEA Commissioner Michael Williams. “Any school earning one or more distinctions should be recognized in its community for the outstanding work taking place on that campus.”

In a press release from the school district, Superintendent Blake Stiles said, “This is excellent news. It means on a district level we are hitting performance targets established by the state. It reflects the efforts of our teachers and campus leadership to do all we can to educate every one of our students to the best of our ability.” Continue reading “Athens ISD Earns Distinctions; Middle School Needs Improvement”

Looking to Place a Foreign Exchange Student

Rotary logoThe Rotary Club of Cedar Creek Lake needs help with placement of a foreign exchange student.

From the Rotary Club, via the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce:

We have a Swedish boy, foreign exchange student whose host family backed out at the last minute. We are looking for host families … He is supposed to arrive sometime this month. He plays tennis and probably speaks better English than we do. If we can find two host families in MISD then he could go to Mabank High School. He is probably a Senior. Typically the dates are from August – December for the first family then from January to June or July when he would leave to go home for the second family. The family responsibility is to provide room, three meals a day and transportation to and from school, events, Rotary stuff etc. If you would like more information, please contact Barbara Turner at 903-498-4636. She is the Youth Exchange person in our Rotary district and can answer all the questions everyone has.
