FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY

1. Former Henderson County Sheriff Charlie Fields, Jr. passed away over the weekend. Services are scheduled for Wednesday.

2. The ballot is set for the Athens ISD election, while it looks like the City of Athens won’t need an election.

3. It is Kiwanis Pancake Day.

4. AMA: The GoBus. I answer another question about the county, this one dealing with that blue and white shuttle bus scooting around.

5. The Cross Roads ISD school board is scheduled to hold a special meeting this evening at 6 p.m. at the Administration Building. Facility planning is on the agenda.

– There is still time to sign up for the Henderson County Girls Softball league. 

– The TVCC Cardinals will start their Regional tournament run this afternoon at 1 p.m. against Angelina. The tournament is on the campus of UT-Tyler. 

– The Athens Lady Hornets went 5-0 in last weekend’s Tyler softball tournament. 

Jimmy and Martha Mitchell were presented the Outstanding Cardinal Award.

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY

1. The Region XIV Basketball Championship tournament will be held this week at the Patriot Center on the campus of UT-Tyler. The TVCC Lady Cardinals are the first seed on the women’s side and will start play 1 p.m. Wednesday against Tyler Junior College. The TVCC Cardinals are the No. 8 seed on their side and will start play 1 p.m. Tuesday against Angelina. 

2. Athens High School was recognized by Carter BloodCare for its blood drive efforts. 

3. Folks from the Cedar Creek Lake area traveled to Austin last week to talk about a new bridge with area lawmakers.

4. The Martin’s Mill girls won the Class 1A state title this weekend with a 49-46 win over Smyer. 

5. State Rep. Lance Gooden filed two bills to help customers of investor-owned water utilities.

TxDOT says “crews this week are scheduled to perform edge-repair work on FM 317 east of Athens between FM 607 in Leagueville and FM 315 in New York, and on FM 607 between FM 804 and U.S. 175 in LaRue. Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location.”

Softball sign-ups for the Henderson County Girls Softball Association have begun. Sign-ups will be Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cain Park.

Malakoff Teenage Baseball/Softball scheduled sign ups March 2 under the pavilion at Kilman field from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students from Malakoff, CrossRoads, Athens and Trinidad areas are eligible.

The Trinity Valley Community College Music Department will present a concert, titled “Our Musical Heritage, the Folk Music of America,” at 3 p.m. March 3. The concert will take place at Dogwood Church in Athens and there is no charge for admission. Dogwood Church is located at 6467 Farm-to-Market Road 2494 in Athens.

Trinity Valley Community College will host the Cruisin’ Cardinals Car Show from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. March 2 in the front parking lot of the Athens campus. The show is open to all makes and models of car, truck, motorcycle and boat. Registration for the show is $15 for a car or truck and $7 for a motorcycle or a boat. Awards will be given for best of show. Registration is not needed in advance, but can be done at the event. For more information, contact the TVCC Student Activities Office at 903-675-6252. The show proceeds will benefit students taking an alternative spring break in Romania to help orphans in need.
