TxDOT crews ready should winter storm impact roads

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) crews will report for duty this evening and are ready to work throughout the night in response to forecasted icy weather conditions that could impact area roadways. If inclement weather develops motorists are reminded to reduce speeds considerably below the posted speed limits and to avoid driving completely if conditions warrant, from now on all trucks should to go trough vehicle weighing scales to make sure weight is the appropriate and this is not being an issue.

TxDOT spokeswoman, Kathi White, said maintenance crews have completed pre-treatment of various elevated structures around the Tyler District and have prepared their dump trucks and equipment to respond as weather conditions change. Upon reporting for work, crews will begin monitoring roadways, increasing their activity as night falls and the chance for icy conditions move in. Update 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 – Winter Storm Warning

The National Weather Service has reduced the length of the Winter Storm Warning. It is now set to expire at 12 p.m. today, six hours before previously thought.

The NWS predicts: “Continued light snow expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the morning commute on Tuesday. Total snow accumulations of around an inch have occurred.”

Update 4 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 – Malakoff ISD

Malakoff ISD announced it will be closed today.

Update 10:30 p.m. Monday, Jan 15 – LaPoynor ISD

LaPoynor ISD will be closed Tuesday due to incoming bad weather. We will also have a late start on Wednesday.

Update 9:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 – Cross Roads ISD closed

Cross Roads ISD announced it will be closed Tuesday.

Update 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 — Martin’s Mill and Brownsboro delayed

Martin’s Mill and Brownsboro ISDs have announced the will be opening at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The following is from the Athens ISD Facebook page: “AHS basketball is cancelled for Tuesday vs Madisonville. Rescheduled for Wednesday varsity only. Girls at 4:30 and boys at 6 here. Girls soccer vs Pittsburg Tuesday has been cancelled and may be rescheduled at a later date.”

UPDATE 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 — Murchison and ACPA

Murchison ISD will be closed Tuesday.

Athens Christian Preparatory Academy has announced it will have a two-hour delay Tuesday. High School and Junior High report during third period, 10 a.m. Homeschool will start at 10:30 a.m.

UPDATE: 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 — TxDOT ready

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) says that maintenance crews in the Tyler District have prepared their dump trucks and equipment to resond as weather conditions change.

“If current forecasts hold, travel disruptions and problems on area roads will be possible through Wednesday. The safest option during icy conditions is to stay off the roads,” TxDOT spokeswoman Kathi White said. “If you absolutely must drive, slow down and use extra precaution especially on elevated surfaces.”

UPDATE: 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 — Athens ISD delayed

Athens ISD is implementing a two-hour delay for staff and students at the start of school Tuesday. This will give them extra time to make a decision regarding the weather.

First Post 11:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15 — Eustace ISD closed

We already have our first school closing because of the possible winter weather. Eustace ISD will be closed Tuesday.

In a Facebook statement, EISD Superintendent Coy Holcombe wrote, “Due to the expected bad weather, and to give everyone a chance to get well, all classes will be canceled for Tuesday. Right now, we will plan to start school at regular times on Wednesday. The start time for Wednesday may need to be adjusted depending on road conditions.”

A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect for Henderson County from midnight Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The National Weather Service reports, “Light to moderate winter precipitation is expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions tonight through Wednesday morning. Total sleet and snow accumulations of a half inch up to 2 inches are possible. Ice accumulations of a light glaze are also possible.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day events scheduled

One of the most important Martin Luther King Jr. Day events held locally each year is the Henderson County Black History Committee’s Gospel Explosion.

This year’s event will be held at Johnson Chapel AME Church in Malakoff 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, and will feature Chuck and The Guiding Clouds from Huntsville.

This is a Henderson County tradition and a great event for music lovers of all ages.

Candlelight Vigil

The Henderson County Black History Committee will host its annual Candlelight Vigil to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at New Hope Corinth C.M.E. Church in Malakoff. The special speaker will be the Rev. Keith Ray of Johnson Chapel A.M.E. Church.

All are invited.
