On Tuesday, September 27, Henderson County Commissioner’s Court members signed a proclamation that declares October 2016 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Henderson County. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.

“While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same,” said Henderson County Extension Agent Carolyn Tyler.

United Way kicks off 2016-17 campaign with wine tour

The Henderson County United Way is kicking off the 2016‐17 campaign with a wine tour of four local wineries Saturday, Sept. 10. This inaugural event will take participants by bus from downtown at the Justice Center 203 W. Corsicana St. Athens to 3P’s in a Vine Winery and White Fox Vineyard followed by lunch at Chick’s BBQ in Murchison, ending the afternoon with stops at Castle Oaks Winery and Tara Winery. Snacks will be provided at each stop to compliment the tasting experience.

TxDOT update for the Week of Aug. 29

TxDOT (Athens) Maintenance plans to perform edge maintenance around the county with a second crew addressing drainage and slope issues on roads around the county as well. A contractor will resume work on FM 334 between Legendary Drive and Arnolds-Hills Road. Flaggers will provide traffic control.

Black History Committee Car Show winners

The Henderson County Black History Committee held its 5th Annual Car Show on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Malakoff High School. The day will filled with sun and fun with the Malakoff High School having an inner squad football game scrimmage.

All funds raised at the car show will go toward the HCBHC scholarship fund and thanks go out to all who participated and came out for the car show.

Agrilife scientist gives advice about Zika virus

The mosquito-transmitted Zika virus is a potential threat to the health of unborn babies in Texas and other states, and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service has stepped up efforts to educate the public on ways to protect themselves from this new menace, said agency entomologists.

“While people enjoy outdoor activities and travel this summer, it’s important to remember that our first line of defense against Zika is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes,” said Dr. Sonja Swiger, AgriLife Extension entomologist at Stephenville. “The Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus mosquitoes that transmit Zika occur commonly in our backyards where their eggs are laid and larvae live in standing water. Like other mosquito species, they are active at sunrise and sunset, but commonly bite throughout the day as well.”
