Athens Economic Development Corporation was recognized this week at Texas Economic Development Council’s annual meeting in Houston, earning Merit Recognition for the 2017 Community Economic Development Awards.

The 2017 CEDA recipients were announced at the annual CEDA luncheon held Thursday, October 19. “This year, we received a record 40 applications across six population categories,” said Carlton Schwab, president of TEDC. “The recipients are judged in five categories that have made the most significant contribution to economic development in their community and the state of Texas.”

Chamber honors Bud Henry

Last week, the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce took a moment to honor E.H. “Bud” Henry for his many contributions to the community. Mr. Henry recently moved out of Henderson County. As a retired Army Colonel, Mr. Henry was a natural working with Leadership Cedar Creek Lake for the chamber and also served as the GBC City Manager and the ECCFWSD General Manager during his time at the lake. Pictured presenting him with a plaque is Chamber President Jo Ann Hanstrom.

Athens EDC wins Community Economic Development Award

The Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC) has announced the recipients of its annual Community Economic Development Awards (CEDA). Athens Economic Development Corporation submitted a process which transformed the loss of a biotech operation into an opportunity for growth and investment. The entry was the winner in the category of Communities with 5,001—15,000 in Population. Winners were recognized at an awards luncheon held in their honor Monday, August 21, at SEDC’s annual conference in Charlotte, NC.

“Economic Developers in the South are some of the best in the business,” said SEDC 2017 Chairman Robert E. Leak, Jr. “This award goes to communities that exemplify the highest level of economic development professionalism. We are proud to have them in the SEDC region.”
