Henderson County Master Gardeners Vegetable Workshop

KAB

Spring is almost here and it will soon be time to plant gardens again. Whether you are an experienced or a novice gardener, sharpen your tools and your pencils. The Henderson County Master Gardeners are gearing up to help area gardeners by presenting educational sessions on various aspects of gardening. HCMG’s first educational program for the year, a workshop on vegetable production, will be held in conjunction with the Keep Athens Beautiful Home and Garden show, an event that is also free to the public.

The free workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Cain Center located at 915 South Palestine Street in Athens. There will be morning and afternoon sessions to begin at 9 a.m. and at 1 p.m. that will include classes on soil preparation and composting led by Bob Erickson and Margaret Rands, both HCMG master gardeners.

The morning session of the HCMG workshop will feature Dave Whitinger, the founder of two popular garden websites, “All Things Plants” and “Dave’s Gardens”. Whitinger’s topic for the Feb. 22 workshop will focus on ways to add food crops to the landscape and will begin at 10 a.m.

Dave Whitinger and his family keep a homestead near Jacksonville, Texas, where they raise all kinds of food crops as well as cows, chickens and other domestic animals. In addition to being a member of the Cherokee County Master Gardeners, Whitinger’s passion, as a software programmer, is to bring gardeners together online. He frequently lectures about gardening, permaculture and other gardening innovations to gardening groups throughout Texas.

The afternoon sessions will begin at noon and will feature Barbara Gosnell, a local Athens gardener who offers her produce for sale at the Athens Farmers Market throughout the summer. Gosnell will inform attendees on what can be planted right now and offer advice on how to plan the planting season to keep your table full throughout the growing season.

The master gardeners will distribute free handouts on vegetable gardening including recommended varieties, planting dates and soil test kits during the event. Additional master gardeners will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.to offer advice and answer individual questions.

The general public will be able to purchase tickets to the HCMG Spring Conference to be held Thursday, March 27. The conference includes dinner and featured speaker, Dr. Steve George, from the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Dallas. His topic will be “From Roses to Vegetables to Shade Trees: Creating a truly Earth-Kind Landscape.”

Three stops scheduled for Farm & Ranch Tour

The 50th Annual Henderson County Farm & Ranch Tour will be taking off from the Fairpark Complex tomorrow at 9 a.m. … and there are three great stops planned (read about the speakers here):

J1 Ranch

J1 Ranch is a cattle operation begun by Ben and Patsy Johnson in the 1960s. It began by purchasing land in western Henderson County. This land was sold in the early 1980s to purchase the current location, which consists of 1,400 acres in southern Henderson County. J1 Ranch is a family run business with Patsy and Chris, her son, making management decisions.

The livestock include grass finished yearlings and a cow-calf enterprise. The current cow herd is close to 300 pairs with approximately 50 heifers retained as replacements every year. Calves are born in the spring and weaned in the fall. They are retained, finished on grass, and sold at 22 to 28 months of age weighing about 1,100 pounds.

Old-school speakers headline Farm and Ranch Tour

The 50th Annual Farm and Ranch Tour, sponsored by the Athens Chamber of Commerce, will be held Tuesday, May 21, and for the special day organizers have brought back some special speakers.

The lunch will feature: Wyndel Tackett, Gayle Finch and Rex Holmes.

“We’re going old school on the speakers, because we are bringing back the guys who were here when it started,” AgriLife Extension Agent Rick Hirsch said. “You’ve got more than 100 years of agriculture in Henderson County speaking.”

Letter: HCLS raises nearly $500,000

Livestock Show bannerMichael,

On behalf of everyone involved in the Henderson County Livestock Show, I’d like to say “Thank you” for the coverage you provided for our event through your Facebook Page, Henderson County Now. As you know, we had a busy but rewarding week and the coverage you provided certainly was a part of our success and very much appreciated.

As soon as we have the final numbers available, I will get them to you but it appears that the total of our Premium Auction, Commercial Heifer Auction, Project Show Sale and scholarships will again total approximately $500,000. It truly was another successful Henderson County Livestock Show.

Thank you again.

Danny Davis
President, HCLS

Danny asked me to post his letter here … but it really is me who should be saying thank you …. the officers and organizers and volunteers and ag teachers out at the HCLS were always so happy to answer my yankee questions … without them, I wouldn’t know the difference between the market swine and the breeding swine (Oops, made that mistake!).

And let’s not gloss by the “again” in the sentence above where Danny tells us that the livestock show raised nearly half a million dollars for local kids. … The HCLS really is THE premier event in the county each year.

I can’t wait to take the Weinstein Law bus out to #HCLS2014 next year.

My only question about the livestock show … Is anyone else still tired?
