Funeral services for Barney Kenneth Slaton, 78, Athens is scheduled for noon Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time.

Mr. Slaton passed away May 17, 2013 in his hometown of Athens where he was born Feb. 9, 1935 to the late Taylor Columbus and Lillian Marguerite Clampett Slaton. He worked in construction 25 years as a backhoe operator. Kenneth loved his family and friends, NASCAR races and country music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Jerry Don Slaton, Gary R. Slaton, sister Betty Sue Slaton.

I could write a story from Keep Athens Beautiful’s 25th Anniversary Celebration Saturday night, but I could never do as well as Darwin Winfield did with his speech … so I’ll let Darwin have the stage one more time … and don’t forget to check out the KAB award winners here. — Michael

Like so many of the things that make this world great, Keep Athens Beautiful started with a great idea and a few really dedicated people.

The result of their vision: a town that is cleaner and prettier where children are taught to recycle and trees are planted every year.

Recently, Carol and Jennifer sat down with the beautiful Margaret Myers, who was an integral part of KAB’s beginning. They also spent time talking to Felecia Cain, the first executive director. They even asked me a few questions. I really had to dig into the upstairs archives to find the answers, but I think I got most of it right.

Obituary: Patsy J. Rowland

Services for Patsy J. Rowland will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Huckabee/Tomlinson Funeral Home in Seven Points. Visitation will be from 6-8 Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the funeral home.

Patsy was born March 12, 1934 in Ryan, Okla. to Thurman and Lucille “Roberts” Mitchell.

She died in Athens May 18, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billie Gene Rowland; grandson, Billy Sapp; granddaughter, Rosie Steele.

She is survived by her daughters, Becky Sapp and Tracey Nichols; son, Rick Rowland and wife Paula; sister, Shirley Rawlinson; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.
