Around Malakoff: Plenty of hummingbirds

Loretta Humble
Loretta Humble

By Loretta Humble

I am besieged by hummingbirds. It is wonderful.

Still nursing my toe after surgery, I have been forced to stop and pay attention to things around me. This is probably good for me, as my daughter Liz has long contended I have Attention Deficit Disorder — that I can’t or won’t stay focused, but flit from thing to thing. Kind of like these hummingbirds.

Obviously, these guys are not setting me a good example, but they sure are fun to watch. I’m sitting in my recliner with my laptop in my lap and keeping a close eye on them. In past years, I’ve only been able to attract one or two, but this year I’ve hit the jackpot. They won’t be still and let me count them, but I know that sometimes there are bound to be at least two dozen of the little boogers buzzing around at one time, bumping one another. Then they will disappear. Then a crowd will reappear. I thought these were the same birds coming back, but now I have been made aware I may be seeing whole new crowds—they are migrating, after all.

They are consuming at least a quart of my homemade nectar a day from my three feeders. I need more feeders, and soon will need more sugar.

I understand I’m not the only person with lots of hummingbirds this year, and I’m told because the drought has dried all the flowers, the birds are actually hungry.

I’m pretty sure this time of year other birds can find plenty to eat by themselves, especially if they like grasshoppers, Continue reading “Around Malakoff: Plenty of hummingbirds”

Assistant DA announces run for County Court-at-Law bench

Mark Hall Announcement

Mark Hall press release

At a meeting of the Lone Star Republican Women held last Thursday in Athens, First Assistant District Attorney Mark W. Hall announced that he is seeking the judgeship of the Henderson County Court at Law No. 1, currently held by Matt Livingston. Judge Livingston, who has held the bench for almost 28 years, has not publicly announced whether he will seek another term.

Hall told those gathered that while a judge must be unbiased in matters that come before him or her, and refrain from making decisions for political purposes, an unwavering adherence to the Constitution is to him, the epitome of being a conservative, and from which he will not deviate.

Hall has been the First Assistant to Henderson County District Attorney Scott McKee since McKee assumed office in January 2009. He filled in for McKee in the District Attorney’s Office during most of 2010 while McKee was deployed to Iraq as an Infantry Battalion Operations Officer. Louisiana experience pays: our clients’ cases are occasionally dismissed entirely or their charges are reduced, meaning that points don’t appear on our client’s record. Make sure you contact our office at least two weeks prior to your court date. You can learn more here about the speeding ticket lawyer in Louisiana .

“I couldn’t think of anyone more qualified than Mark to assume the County Court at Law No.1. Mark is not only a friend and a mentor, he is the most fair and honest person I know. He has a passion for the Constitution and the rule of law.” Continue reading “Assistant DA announces run for County Court-at-Law bench”
