AROUND MALAKOFF: Big time at the Swing Festival

I had another great weekend. I have to tell you about it, but I’ll try to tell you a little shorter this week.

My friend John Walker is a big-time music lover, and so he was eager to be here for the Texas Swing and Heritage Festival held at the Cain Center recently. I had an added incentive to attend, since the Family Peace Project, of which I am a board member, had the monopoly on selling water, and I had promised to help. This was supposed to be a big boost to the funds of that wonderful charity. But wouldn’t you know—it turned cold that morning and stayed so cool all day there was not much call for water that day. And as they didn’t need my help selling water, they sent me to sit beside Catherine Lenz at the admission table to sell chances on a beautiful silver motor scooter we hope will make up for the slim water sales.

After a while, when my poor chance-selling ability became obvious, Catherine told me she would handle it— go have fun with John, which I happily did. It is a wonderful festival. If you missed it this year, please put it on your calendar. There was great music all over the place.

It went on till 10 p.m., but we had to leave a little early, as Carl had got himself stranded in Rosser, at one of his Native American sweat lodges, and we had to go get him. We ended the day with a really nice dinner at Ochoa’s, where we were the last ones out.

After enjoying our Sunday morning green smoothies we drove out to Ben Wheeler to watch them get ready for the Feral Hog Fest, but we didn’t see a lot of action. However, it was real nice sitting on the porch at The Forge sipping coffee and having snacks of some excellent stuffed things..stuffed mushrooms, stuffed peppers, stuffed eggs.

From there we thought we’d just drop by and see if Edom was any more lively. Oh my, was it! It was Edom’s Arts and Crafts weekend. All kinds of wonderful crafts and crafty neat people to talk to, and music all over the place there. I was determined to take a picture of every vendor’s booth and post them on www.facebook.com/aroundthetown, and I did get most of them, but my battery died before I got the last four or five. What great places those two little towns are!

We finished off our afternoon with our customary pecan pie on the deck at Lake Athens Marina, before John headed off to Dallas where he had another event to attend. I just went home and rested.

I am very proud to have finally have a green smoothie disciple in John. He loves them, and went home last week determined to make his own, following my directions. I told him what goes in them: greens, including the purslane, and probably some spinach, and fruits of choice to make it taste good, as well as local honey, cinnamon, ginger root, cayenne, and stuff like that. So he went home and followed my direction and burned up his blender. I had forgotten to list one other ingredient: water.

Undeterred by the blender dying, John just added some cranberry juice to the half blended stuff and enjoyed crunching it. I loaned him my extra blender while he shops for his own. Or maybe if he likes it, I’ll see what he’ll trade me for it.
