AISD Hears Positive Report on Delinquent Tax Collections

Members of the Athens ISD Board of Trustees received good news Thursday night when attorney Harvey Allen presented them with the delinquent property tax collections report. Allen is with the Austin-based law firm McCreary, Veselka, Bragg & Allen, P.C., which performs the collection of delinquent property taxes on behalf of the school district.

According to the report, in each of the last four fiscal years, the district’s total revenue from tax collections has exceeded the amount of taxes assessed. That is possible because of the penalties and interest collected on delinquent taxes. The percentage collected for the 2013 tax year (fiscal year ending June 30, 2014) is 101.56 percent. The actual dollar amount is $14,514,582, which includes $243,557 in penalties and interest on delinquent taxes.

Board member Alicea Elliott asked Allen how AISD compares to other school districts in that regard. “Your collection rates here at Athens ISD are about as good as it gets,” he replied.

Business and community leaders got a glimpse of the best Trinity Valley Community College has to offer during the Athens Leadership Institute’s Education Day on Wednesday.

ALI – which aims to educate leaders about the community in which they live, invest, worship and work – got a tour of facilities and heard reports from a number of TVCC administrators. TVCC President Dr. Glendon Forgey talked about TVCC’s selection as one of the top community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute.

Aspen recognizes institutions for exceptional student outcomes in four areas: student learning, certificate and degree completion, employment and earnings, and high levels of access and success for minority and low-income students.

“It’s because of our administration, faculty and staff that we have received that honor three years running,” Forgey said. Continue reading “Community Group Hears Reports from Administrators, Tour TVCC”

Questions about enrolling at Trinity Valley Community College? We’ve got answers.

TVCC will open a two-day phone bank to answer questions about enrollment on Wednesday, December 3, and Thursday, December 4, from 6-8 p.m. The phone bank will be staffed by members of the Iota Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa – the national honors society for two-year community and junior colleges.

“Sometimes people have questions but they don’t know how to get the answers,” TVCC Phi Theta Kappa advisor Nancy Long said. “What often happens is that person then ends up not registering, so we’re hoping to help those people stay connected to the process. If we don’t know the answer to a question, we’re going to assure the caller that we will get them in touch with someone who does.” Continue reading “TVCC Setting Up Registration Phone Bank Dec. 3-4”
