Athens angler catches state record

Athens resident Bryan Smith, a volunteer at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, caught the new fly rod state record channel catfish from the Center’s casting pond on May 24.

When Bryan Smith of Athens isn’t helping visitors to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) catch fish, he does some fishing on his own.

On Friday, May 24, the TFFC volunteer took advantage of some free time to do a little fly-fishing.

“Fly-fishing is my passion, and nothing could have been greater than what happened that day,” Smith said. What happened was a new state record for heaviest channel catfish caught on a fly rod. The fish weighed 20.8 pounds and was 35.5 inches long.

Hay Day Vacation Bible School at Carroll Springs UMC will be from 6-9 p.m. July 8-12. The VBS program will be Sunday, July 14, at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch and games. Carroll Springs UMC is located at 5810 CR 4600.

 

Obituary: Sandra Pauline Skinner McDonald Tregre

Sandra Pauline Skinner McDonald Tregre, 77, of Gun Barrel City was born on March 1, 1936 to the home of Harry and Beartha Skinner and passed away in on May 27, 2013 in Kaufman.

Sandra was a nun for the order of Mt. Saint Scholastica and taught art for over 20 years. She was a skilled sculptress and was commissioned to do a statue of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizell which is in Corsicana.

She is preceded in death by her parents; first husband C. D. “Doug” McDonald; second husband Gene Tregre; and sister Gil Thompson.

She is survived by stepson Doug McDonald, Jr.; godson Collin McDonald; brother Ed Skinner and brother-in-law Jim Thompson and other family members and many friends.

Rosary services will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Moorhead Epps Funeral Home in Gun Barrel City. Mass Of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2013 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Gun Barrel City.

Seniors from Athens Christian Preparatory recently returned from their senior trip. This year’s students enjoyed a trip to Orange Beach, Ala. The group’s itinerary included a stop at the Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, La. and an overnight stay in Baton Rouge. The students then stayed in Orange Beach for four days.
