It’s Trinity Valley Community College again atop the Community College Division of the Play 4Kay initiative of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
For a third straight year, TVCC has won the divisional title, raising $12,000. The college’s goal at the annual Play 4Kay game on Feb. 17 was $10,500.
“Extremely proud of the TVCC Athletics staff, administration, faculty, staff and students for the effort to once again raise so much funding and, more importantly, awareness for this cause,” TVCC athletic director and head football coach Brad Smiley said. “The show of support we received from these groups plus the community of Athens and our Cardinal supporters is not only amazing but inspiring as well.”
TVCC participated in Play 4Kay for a ninth straight year.
Play 4Kay is the grassroots fundraising initiative of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Its primary fundraising support comes from women’s basketball teams across the country that dedicate an event to raise funds and awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, an organization committed to funding women’s cancer research and supporting projects that assist the underserved community.
The institutions that raised the most funds in each division will be recognized on April 1, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the NCAA® Women’s Final Four and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund’s Wow 4Yow event.
The 2016 Play 4Kay divisional winners are:
- NCAA Division I (BCS): TBD
- NCAA Division I (Non-BCS): Illinois State University
- NCAA Division II: Lenoir-Rhyne University
- NCAA Division III: Moravian College; Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
- NAIA: Faulkner University; Montgomery, Alabama
- Community College: Trinity Valley Community College; Athens, Texas

“The 2016 Play4Kay fundraising initiative is a testament to the commitment the women’s basketball community has for the mission of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund,” said Kay Yow Cancer Fund Executive Director Stephanie Glance.
“Coach Yow’s vision for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Play 4Kay fundraising initiative was to unite a nation of coaches and the women’s basketball community across the country, to do something collectively for the greater good, that far exceeds wins and losses on the court.
Since the Fund’s inception, more than $5.28 million has been allocated in support of women’s cancer research and serving the underserved.
