Malakoff, Cross Roads Make ‘Reward Schools’ List

The U.S. Department of Education released its list of Reward Schools last weekend, and two county schools earned the top designation.

The list identifies High Performing Schools and High Progress Schools based on 2013 accountability reports.

High Performing Schools are schools that have received “distinction designations based on math and reading performance, and at the high school level, is also among the Title I schools with the highest graduation rates; or (2) has exceeded (Adequate Yearly Progress) for two or more consecutive years.”

Cross Roads Shooting Victim in Stable Condition

The 11-year-old Cross Roads boy who was accidentally shot in the chest with a shotgun yesterday is in stable condition at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office officials said this morning.

Police are still not releasing the boy’s name because he is a juvenile.

In a press release, Chief Deputy Botie Hillouse said the shooting happened about 1:37 p.m. Thursday, June 26, in the 14000 block of FM 59 in the Cross Roads area.

According to the press release, it appears that the shooting was accidental and was done by a second juvenile male.

A search warrant was issued by Henderson County Court-at-Law Judge Nancy Perryman to search the premises. According to the press release, “the investigation into the shooting and into the accessibility of the firearm to the child is ongoing.”

Obituary: Terry Locke

Terry Locke 1Terry Locke of Payne Springs passed away on June 21, 2014 at the age of 57.

Terry was born in Athens on April 4, 1957 to Larry and Sue Pierce Locke.

He is survived by his loving wife Josephine Locke, daughter, Copper and husband Donald Brasher, son, Jerry and wife Jennifer Locke, daughter, Leslie Duran, daughter, Shelly and husband Jimmy Carrasco, sister, Sherrie Chitty, brothers, Garry and Kerry Locke, grandchildren, Colton Bock, Brook Locke, Jonathan Duran, Samantha Duran, Joseph Duran, Lilly Carrasco, Desi Carrasco.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Sue Locke, sister Mary Locke, son-in-law, David Duran.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Huckabee/Tomlinson Funeral Home in Malakoff.

Services will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church Cross Roads with Bro. Frank Upchurch officiating. Interment will follow at Patterson Cemetery, Cross Roads.

Pallbearers will be Deke Crutchfield, Jeremy Crutchfield, Justin Hairgrove, Jacob Chitty, Colton Bock, Jimmy Carrasco.
