Saturday is Election Day

Saturday is Election Day in Henderson County. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voting locations listed in parenthesis.

The following elections are scheduled:

ATHENS (Voter Registration Office, 201 J East Larkin)

There are three contested races for the Athens City Council. In Place 1, Joe Whatley takes on Carol Barton; in Place 2, Charles Elliott faces Aubrey Jones; and in Place 3, Tres Winn is running against Elaine Jenkins. In addition, there will be one proposition on the ballot. The proposition reads:

“Approve City of Athens Ordinance No. 0-01-14 abolishing and dissolving the Athens Municipal Water Authority, eliminating the associated ad valorem tax assessed and collected by the Authority, and vesting the City of Athens will all assets and operations of the Authority.”

AMWA (Voter Registration Office, 201 J East Larkin)

Four candidates are running for two open seats on the Athens Municipal Water Authority Board. They are: Mike Peek, Herbert Gatlin, Gregory Hisey, and William “Billy” Carter.

CANEY CITY (City Hall, 15241 Barron Rd.)

There are three open seats on the Caney City City Council. Candidates are: Lawanda Robertson, Pat Mayfield, Lamar Mathews, Randy Reeder, and Claude Miller.

CHANDLER (Community Center, 811 State Highway 31 E)

Voters in Chandler will be electing three City Council members. Candidates include: Michael Chandler, Janeice Lunsford, James Allison, M.E. “Gene” Giger, and Don Daniell.

CROSS ROADS ISD (CRISD Administration Building)

Cross Roads ISD residents must make a decision on a $4.5 million bond in May’s election. Plans call for about $500,000 of the bond to be used for repairs and improvements to existing facilities and the rest to build a 29,000 square-foot gym which will double as a student event center. GUN BARREL CITY (City Hall, 1716 West Main Street …. St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 130 Luther Lane.)

Two men — Paul Eaton and Jim Braswell — will face each other to be mayor of Gun Barrel City. In the Place 2 Council seat race, Ron Wyrick is running unopposed.

MABANK ISD (Mabank City Hall, 129 E. Market Street)

There is only one contested race in Mabank ISD’s board elections. In Place 4, Mike Cathey will take on Erik Tijerina. In other races, Jeremy Zmolik (Place 2) and Todd Grimes (Place 5) are unopposed.

There are three seats open for the Mabank City Council. Candidates include: John Chappell, Shannon Steakley, Dennis Terry, and Jody Ferrell.

SEVEN POINTS (City Hall, 428 East Cedar Creek Parkway)

The Seven Points mayor’s race will see Bill Hash up against Gerald Taylor. In City Council races, Cheryl Jones and Karon Flagg are unopposed.

TOOL (Oran White Civic Center, 701 N. Tool Drive)

There is a busy ballot in Tool where seven candidates are vying for three seats. Candidates include: Randy Whitehurst, Cindy Clounch, Mike Barr, Rick Williams, Fran Sonka, Kathryn Pinnell, and A.J. “Red” Phillips.
