Republican attorney and businessman Jeff Weinstein kicked off his campaign for Henderson County Judge this morning in hopes of succeeding two-term Judge Richard Sanders who will not be seeking re-election in 2018. Weinstein, a political novice who has been a fixture in the Athens civic community for nearly thirty years, said he has become increasingly frustrated with the business-as-usual attitude found at all levels of government, from the courthouse to Congress.
“If you’re like me, then you’re tired of hearing the same old excuses from the same old politicians,” Weinstein said. “Phrases like ‘because that’s the way we’ve always done it’ are not in the taxpayers’ best interest and need to become a thing of the past. I want to be a real champion of the taxpayer by promoting transparency, eliminating wasteful spending, and providing real tax relief to my friends and neighbors across Henderson County.”
A native of Fort Worth, Jeff grew up in his family’s hardware store where he quickly learned the value of a hard day’s work. He began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in Dallas County, and later worked as an insurance defense attorney before moving to Athens in 1990 and establishing his own small business and law firm. In addition to practicing law, Jeff obtained his Texas Real Estate Broker’s license in 2006 and opened Weinstein Real Estate.
Jeff is also heavily invested in the Henderson County community. He is one of the founders of the Silver Screen Movie Club and the Uncle Fletch Festival, which celebrates Uncle Fletch Davis who invented the hamburger here in Athens. He is also a former board member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) East Texas, and he co-founded No to Distracted Driving (NODD) in 2010 with the aim to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and to encourage drivers to put down their cell phones when behind the wheel. The American Association of Justice named Jeff the “Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year” for his dedication to preventing texting and driving.
Weinstein said he believes that, if elected, it will be his personal responsibility to control government spending, lessen the burden on taxpayers, and work to create quality local job opportunities and economic prosperity. Although he has never held public office, he said he knows the key to success lies in bringing all areas of the county together to promote real conservative policies that benefit everyone.
“I’m committed to running the county more like a business,” Weinstein concluded. “My background in business, the law, and my 27 years in Henderson County volunteering in the community have prepared me for the challenges ahead, but I cannot do this alone. So let’s work together with a singular vision to create a conservative county government that serves the people – not the other way around.”
Jeff graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1983 and earned his law degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1986. He is the proud father of three daughters and resides in Athens.
