Obituary: Joyce Grubbs

Grubbs, JoyceFuneral services are scheduled for Joyce Grubbs, 63, of Athens, Texas at 11 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens with Bro. Scotty Short officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Athens.

Mrs. Grubbs went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 in Tyler, Texas after a very lengthy battle with kidney disease.

Joyce Elaine Bearden Grubbs was born September 28, 1951 in Athens, Texas to Jimmy Bearden and Betty Jane Pickle Bearden. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Blackjack Community. She loved camping, playing dominoes and cards but her true love was her family. Ninny was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who will be greatly missed by all she knew and loved. Presentation to Focus on Favorite Hymns of the Presidents

Dr. Edward Spann, Dallas hymnologist and retired dean of the College of Fine Arts at Dallas Baptist University, will speak at First Christian Church on July 5 at 10:45 a.m. The church is located at 900 Robbins Road in Athens.

Spann served as missionary in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he founded the Department of Sacred Music at the Baptist Seminary.

The multi-media presentation will be called “Presidential Praise: Our Presidents and their Hymns.” He will also tell numerous hymn stories and discuss the United States’ presidents’ favorite hymns. Continue reading “Presentation to Focus on Favorite Hymns of the Presidents”

4th Annual Reading of the Declaration of Independence

The Henderson County Bar Association and Texas Criminal Lawyer’s Association held the fourth annual reading of the Declaration of Independence Thursday afternoon on the steps of the Henderson County Courthouse.

Attorneys taking part in the reading included: Mike Head, Beth Neu, Danny Barnes, Ashley McKee, Linda Altier, Justin Weiner, Nancy Rumar, and Ann Thompson.

The event was spearheaded by attorney Dana Kirk Mayhall.

Woman Arrested on Drug Charge at Game Room

On Wednesday, July 1, Henderson County Narcotic Investigators Kay Langford and Kendell Wellman received information that Connie Stokes was in possession of a quantity of methamphetamine at the YaYa game room on Highway 31 west.

Langford and Wellman along with Chief Deputy Botie Hillhouse went to YaYa game room. Upon entering the game room Connie Stokes was observed playing a gaming machine. Investigators approached Stokes to speak with her. Stokes advised Investigators she did have a pipe on her. (Investigators know a pipe” is commonly used to ingest illegal narcotics.) After further conversation with Stokes, she did advise she did have methamphetamine on her person.

A baggie with suspected methamphetamine was located on Connie Stokes person. A set of digital scales with residue was also located in Connie Stokes purse.

Connie Stokes was arrested and charged with Manufacturing Delivery Controlled Substance PG 1 < 4grams.

Connie Stokes remains in jail at this time on an $8,500 bond.

Do you sing? Play an instrument? TVCC wants you! It’s a proven fact that music will make you smarter in other subjects, and scholarships are available if you qualify. So no matter what your field of study, consider adding choir or band to your fall schedule.

Singers of all abilities are encouraged to audition for a place in the TVCC Choir. You don’t have to have previous choral experience or be a music major, just be able to match pitch.

And the Cardinal Regiment is seeking experienced band members to join their ranks. If you played an instrument and/or marched in high school, you could be on the field and in the parades this fall.
