Press release

State Representative Stuart Spitzer (R-Kaufman) on Wednesday announced he will seek re-election in the 2016 Republican Primary election.

“In my first session in the Legislature, we made history,” Spitzer said.” But there is more to be done to protect the conservative values of the people of Kaufman and Henderson counties and that is why I am asking for the voters’ support.”

Spitzer fought for the Pastoral Protection legislation preventing people from suing members of the clergy from performing marriages if the ceremony is against their deeply held beliefs. Continue reading “Spitzer Announces Re-election Bid”

Press release

The East Texas Crisis Center is asking all stylists in Henderson County to purchase a Cut-It-Out shirt and wear on Aug. 14 to support the fight against domestic violence in Henderson County. Please call the office at 903-675-2137 for more information or to purchase a shirt.

About the program

CUT IT OUT®: Salons Against Domestic Abuse is dedicated to recruiting salon professionals and others to fight the epidemic of domestic violence in communities across the U.S. by building awareness and training salon professionals to recognize warning signs and safely refer clients, colleagues, friends and family to local resources.

Why the Salon Professional?

Salon professionals are in a unique position to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse in their clients and co-workers. Because of the intimate and nurturing nature of the relationship between salon professionals and their clients and co-workers, salon professionals can often spot signs of physical abuse that others may never see.

Research shows that most battered women never call the police or go to a shelter. However, they do usually talk about the abuse with someone they trust. Because salon professionals are skilled and experienced listeners who are personally interested in those around them, many victims suffering from abuse feel comfortable confiding in them – even if they would never tell anyone else. For an abused woman, the salon may be an ideal environment to seek out help because it may be one of the few places she is allowed to go without her abuser.

Around the Town: Trying to Help Don Work

don OdomBy Loretta Humble/Around the Town

I have an update for you on Don, our parolee friend who was released to my place in the country last November. Don had some pretty serious physical problems, including a tracheotomy and a stomach tube which were acquired due to cancer treatment he got in prison. Despite these handicaps, he was very eager—and able– to go to work and make something happen. He had the knowledge to set up a small sawmill which my friend Carl financed, and they had produced a few cedar chests. He had a small trailer to live in, and had started work on an apartment on the side of our workshop here so that he could work any time despite being on a monitor and severely restricted to his living quarters. Athens ISD Board Here Report About Construction

Members of the Athens ISD Board of Trustees took care of business in short order Monday night at their regular monthly meeting.

In his administrative report, Superintendent Blake Stiles said the renovated cafeteria and eight new classrooms at Central Athens Elementary (formerly Athens Intermediate School) will be ready by the first day of school. However, the new connecting hall joining the main building to the cafeteria and gym will not be. The deluge of rain received in the spring and early summer put construction behind schedule. Until the connecting hall is finished, the gym and cafeteria will be accessible from the outside, as they have always been. At the high school, construction on the new band hall will continue into the beginning of the school year. Continue reading “Athens ISD Board Here Report About Construction”
