Athens’ proposed budget focuses on core services

The Athens City Council met in budget talks last week to plan the 2015-16 City budget.

The first thing many residents will want to know is that there is no plan to increase the tax rate. The proposal is to keep the tax rate at .645140 per $100 valuation.

Within the budget, the City will focus on “core services,” which it defines as infrastructure, public safety, water, wastewater, development and parks. Continue reading “Athens’ proposed budget focuses on core services”

TxDOT projects for the Week of Aug. 10

txdotIt looks like TxDOT is going to be very busy in Henderson County this week. Here is a rundown of scheduled projects, according to the agency:

– TxDOT Maintenance is performing overlay operations on SH 198 near FM 316 this week. A second crew is repairing base failures on FM 316 going north between US 175 and FM 1861. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control.

– TxDOT contractor, Striping Technology, Inc., will have a crew adding striping on FM 2709 Henderson County as part of the district-wide safety project to add centerline rumble strips. Expect lane closures. Continue reading “TxDOT projects for the Week of Aug. 10”

Malakoff 7-year-old advances to world mini bronc finals

Malakoff second grader Brant Cookston, 7, placed third in the semifinals for the Mini Bronc World Championship held Aug. 7 at the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, CO.

Back in May, Brant won multiple buckles at the Lonestar High School Rodeo Finals.

Brant has now advanced to the World Mini Bronc Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada Dec. 4-6, to be held during the National Finals Rodeo. Continue reading “Malakoff 7-year-old advances to world mini bronc finals”

2015 School Accountability Ratings

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the 2015 accountability ratings for public schools on Friday. All districts and campuses in the Henderson County area earned a “Met Standard” rating.

In addition, campuses could receive Distinction Designations in the following areas: Top 25% Student Progress, Top 25% Closing Performance Gaps, Academic Achievement in Reading/English Language Arts, Academic Achievement in Mathematics, Academic Achievement in Science, Academic Achievement in Social Studies, and Postsecondary Readiness.
