Marie Wood, representing Malakoff High School Class of 1959, presents a check to Julie Armstrong of the Malakoff Education Foundation Thursday, Aug. 13. The Class of ’59 collected more than $1,800 in remembrance of their classmates who have passed away. TxDOT projects for the Week of Aug. 17
The Texas Department of Transportation will be busy around Henderson County this week. Planned work includes:
— TxDOT Maintenance is conducting culvert work on SH 31 E. The eastbound, outside lane will be closed between Loop 7 and Murchison. Elsewhere, a second crew will return to SH 198 near the FM 316 intersection where overlay operations are being conducted. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control. II. TEA releases 2015 accountability ratings
A. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the 2015 accountability ratings for public schools on Friday. All districts and campuses in the Henderson County area earned a “Met Standard” rating.
In addition, campuses could receive Distinction Designations in the following areas: Top 25% Student Progress, Top 25% Closing Performance Gaps, Academic Achievement in Reading/English Language Arts, Academic Achievement in Mathematics, Academic Achievement in Science, Academic Achievement in Social Studies, and Postsecondary Readiness.
III. Illegal Dumping
A. Henderson County Fire Marshal Shane Renberg and his office fields between three and 10 calls every week for illegal dumping.
“We really want to put a stop to this in the county,” he said. “I don’t know about you, but I’ve lived in this county for a long time and I get tired of driving down the road and seeing this trash dumped everywhere that just spreads all over the county.”
It doesn’t take much to wind up guilty of illegal dumping. The penalties can be stiff. An illegal dumping conviction for as little as 5 pounds of trash can result in jail time.
IV. Live football in one week … Battle in the Valley/Beef Before the Battle
A. The Cardinals are scheduled to kickoff the season 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at home against Nassau Community College in the Battle in the Valley, sponsored by Virtual Communications Specialists President Paul Benson.
Nassau finished last season 10-0 and ranked No. 6 in the nation. The Cardinals finished last season with a 12-0 record and Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC) champions. TVCC ended the year ranked No. 2 in the nation.
At 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, the Weinstein Team will host Beef Before the Battle at the Cain Center, featuring guest speaker DeWayne Owens.
