TVCC to kick off season against No. 5 Nassau

With a 21-game unbeaten streak on the line, the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals can hardly be accused of easing into the 2015 season.

They put the streak and their preseason No. 2 NJCAA ranking at peril Saturday against No. 5-ranked Nassau Community College in the fourth annual Battle In The Valley at Bruce Field. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Cardinals and Nassau were two of three NJCAA teams finishing unbeaten last season. Ninth-year coach Brad Smiley’s Cardinals went 12-0, the third such season in school history, and the Lions went 10-0. Continue reading “TVCC to kick off season against No. 5 Nassau”

HCN Radio sits down to talk about Athens ISD proposed school bond

Henderson County Now Radio invited Athens ISD Superintendent Blake Stiles, Athens High School Principal Jami Ivey, and Bond Advocacy Committee Co-chair Kyle Henderson to join us on our podcast this week to talk about the school district’s proposed $59.9 million bond.

Obituary: Grover Newman

Newman, GroverFuneral services for Grover Newman, 85, of Athens are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2015, at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Athens with Father Matthew Frick officiating. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Livingston, Texas.

Mr. Newman went to be with his Savior on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 in Tyler, Texas.

Grover Travis Newman was born Sept. 22, 1929 in Cleveland, Texas, the son of Jacob Newton Newman and Willie Andrews Newman. He graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in English. He was an ordained Methodist minister, preaching in the East Texas Circuit and Pasadena, Texas before becoming a Lay Minister with the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Houston in 1964. He worked specifically in pastoral care and neighborhood ministry, becoming a mentor for many. Grover had a unique ability to connect in a deep and profound way with the hurting and broken and spent many years working with addicts and the homeless in inner-city Houston, also pioneering a work-for-food program. One of those he served with was quoted as saying “He always looked for the gold in people, their destiny in God, and called that forth.” His life is well described by Dr. Robert Eckert in his book titled Grover Newman, which contains his life’s work, stories, and his poetry. Methamphetamine arrests in Chandler

On Thursday, Aug. 20, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Deputy Brian Huckabee conducted a traffic stop on Highway 315 in Chandler. After making contact with the operator of the vehicle identified as Charles Main, Huckabee conducted a search of the vehicle. Huckabee found a quantity of methamphetamines inside the vehicle. Main and a white female passenger identified as Samantha Shacklett where both found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine. Both Main and Shacklett where placed under arrest and booked into the Henderson County Jail for possession of a controlled substance PG 1 < 1 gram.
