Most of the property in Athens ISD is not covered by homestead exemption

Between 30 and 40 percent of the property in Athens ISD is eligible for the homestead exemption, according to documents obtained from the Henderson County Appraisal District.

Humane Society Thrift Store open this Saturday

The Henderson County Humane Society Litter Box Thrift Store, located at 303 N. Prairieville in Athens, will be open again this Saturday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. As usual, the store has many new items at great prices. All proceeds go to the Henderson County Humane Society in Athens to care for the many animals surrendered to the shelter. The Litter Box is an all-volunteer operation of dedicated people wanting to improve the lives of animals and people in Henderson County.

Woman arrested for Burglary of a Habitation, intent to Commit Assault

On Thursday, Aug. 27, Deputy Rickman with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office responded to an intoxicated person in the Westwood beach subdivision in Chandler. Upon Rickman’s arrival at the address he located Brandi Morgan, 35, of Chandler, who appeared to be intoxicated.

During Rickman’s investigation, he learned that Brandi entered a residence without the owner consent and assaulted the owner while inside the residence. Morgan was taken into custody and was transported to the Henderson County Detention Center.

Morgan was charged with Burglary of a Habitation with intent to Commit Assault, which is a First Degree Felony punishable by 5 years to 99 years in Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison and a fine up to $10,000 dollars. At the time of the press release Brandi Morgan was still in jail waiting to be arraigned.

On Sunday, Aug. 23, Johnson Chapel AME Church in Malakoff celebrated its 118th Homecoming service. The church community of Malakoff, members of the Abe Johnson family, and former pastors and members of the church came home to worship in the afternoon service.
