Obituary: Paula Ann Faver

It is with great sadness that the family of Paula Ann Faver announces her passing after a long battle with cancer, on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at the age of 72 years.

Paula will be lovingly remembered by her husband and best friend of 50 years, Michael and his children, Martha Porter and Michael Faver Jr. Paula will also be fondly remembered by her four grandchildren, Brandie, Sarah, Madeleine, and Ellie. Paula will be dearly missed by her four great-grandchildren. Paula was predeceased by her brothers Bill Rawson, Tommy Rawson, Henry D. Rawson, Robert Rawson, and sister Martha Chapman.

Obituary: Linda G. Odom

Funeral services for Linda G. Odom, 63, of Athens will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 30, 2018 at the First Baptist Church Cross Roads under the direction of Bro. Frank Upchurch with burial to follow at Patterson Cemetery in Cross Roads.

After a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer, Linda Odom, age 63 of Athens passed away peacefully on August 25, 2018.

She was born September 10, 1954 to Donald R Martin and Wanda Iris (Stewart) Martin in Gueydan, LA. She worked many years in Project Controls for different companies. Brown & Root Inc. 19 yrs., Capstone Building Corp. 9 yrs. And S&B Engineers 12 yrs. before hearing the dreadful words “You have cancer”.

Malakoff ISD earns postsecondary readiness distinction

The honors keep rolling in for Malakoff ISD.

Commissioner of Education Mike Morath announced recently that Malakoff ISD was one of 61 school districts and district charters across the state received a distinction designation for postsecondary readiness as part of their 2018 state accountability rating.

Athens City Council reconsiders funding for Cain Center project

Question of restoring the Cain Center could go to voters as a bond election

(UPDATE: Information added regarding what would happen to the Certificates of Obligation if a bond election is called.)

A change of direction by the Athens City Council could send the Cain Center rehabilitation project to the voters for approval, Mayor Monte Montgomery told area reporters Monday afternoon.

According to Montgomery, during a workshop meeting last week council members discussed concerns over the budget impact of not only the ongoing cost of running the Cain Center, but also the cost of the debt for the construction.

Because of those concerns, members of the council asked staff to explore partnering with another entity — either the hospital or the county — to defray the cost. If that doesn’t work, they would like to explore putting the Cain Center question to the voters in the form of a bond election instead of paying for the project with the previously planned Certificates of Obligation (COs).
