HCNotes: Athens applies for grant to recycle glass

During this week’s Athens City Council meeting, council members approved applying for an East Texas Council of Governments Solid Waste Grant.

The grant is worth about $9,000 and will pay for a roll-off receptacle to collect glass for recycling, changing out the receptacle, and for an education piece to be designed by Keep Athens Beautiful.

Athens City Administrator Philip Rodriguez said that Keep Athens Beautiful was an instrumental partner in the grant process.

Keep Athens Beautiful Executive Director Carol Morton said the grant application will be presented later this month.

welchlolaServices for Lola Anita Shelton Welch are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2015 at Carroll- Lehr Funeral Chapel with Rev. Frank Upchurch officiating. Interment will follow in Becks Chapel Cemetery.

Lola passed peacefully into eternity Oct. 15, 2015 surrounded by her loving family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert E. Welch, her parents George W. And Viola Boyd Shelton, her sister Jimmie Lou Bevel and husband John Henry Bevel, Jr., nephew Larry Harvey, grand-nephew Wesley Harvey, uncles George Amos Boyd and William J. Boyd, and more than 40 cousins and friends too numerous to count.

Congratulations, Pride of Malakoff Marching Band

Malakoff ISD LogoThe Pride of Malakoff Marching Band earned straight 1st Division ratings at the UIL Regional Marching Contest Wednesday. The band’s performance qualifies it for the Area Marching Contest at Denton Collins Stadium on Oct. 24.

This marks the second straight year the band has advanced to the Area round and is the latest in an outstanding year for the Pride of Malakoff.
