During the Wednesday, Oct. 14, regular session board meeting, the Athens Municipal Water Authority Board of Directors voted to accept a lease proposal for the Lake Athens Marina Complex.

Since the Lake Athens Marina Restaurant, Bait Shop, and RV Park closed its doors in late 2014, the board of the Athens Municipal Water Authority had been looking for a new concessionaire for the property. It looks like the marina has found its new operator in George Bayoud, of Lake Athens Holdings, LLC.

Grant extends TVCC Adult Education programs

Trinity Valley Community College’s Adult Education Department has been awarded the Accelerate TX Integrated Education and Training grant from the Texas Workforce Commission totaling almost $165,000 to fund the Student Opportunities through Accelerated Resources (S.O.A.R.) project. The purpose of the project is to extend Adult Education and Literacy programs to include training in Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Welding, occupations identified as high-demand industries in the TVCC service area. Other training disciplines may also be offered.

Mabank ISD voters to decide $10 million bond question

Early voting begins this week and in Mabank ISD that means it is time for voters to decide on a $10 million bond.

I learned a few things about this bond proposal at a town hall meeting held last Thursday, such as:

1. The Cost

In a reverse from most school bonds I’ve covered, the price tag came first in this proposal. Simply put, Mabank ISD currently has the chance to pass the $10 million bond without raising taxes.

How? According to officials, it is because the school district has been able to restructure current bonds to save money.

Assistant Superintendent Scott Adams said, “No tax increase is needed to repay the increased amount of debt MISD is seeking due to the use of bond refunding savings, along with using the current Debt Service Fund Balance to fund any balance needed above the current tax levied….”

Crime Stoppers tip leads to drug arrest

On Oct. 16, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office received a Crime Stoppers tip in reference to narcotic activity taking place at a residence on Pinecrest in the Larue area. Henderson County Narcotics Investigator Kendell Wellman and Investigator Josh Rickman made contact with the owner of the property at the residence. That subject was identified as Brian Elmore. Investigators were advised by Elmore that he was smoking marijuana as they arrived at his residence. A search of the property which led to the discovery of marijuana, materials associated with the distribution of narcotics and a large amount of cash. Elmore was placed under arrest for possession of marijuana over two ounces under 4 ounces, a class A misdemeanor. Elmore is awaiting arraignment at this time.
