10 Observations from a crazy night in Eustace

EUSTACE — I have covered some strange football in my time, but Friday night’s game in Eustace was one for the books. It included two lightning delays before finally ending in the second quarter at 9:49 p.m.

But that was just the start of the curious turns the night took.

For the record, the game was called at 11:27 of the second quarter with Winona leading Eustace, 28-14. Don’t let the score fool you, the Bulldogs had shown the ability to move up and down the field and the game was very much in doubt when interrupted.

Here are my 10 Observations from the sidelines.

— TOP TAKEAWAY: You may outscore the Bulldogs, but you aren’t going to play any harder. Eustace brought it on every play and scratched and clawed for every extra yard it could get. Impressive effort.

The reasons why the City of Athens is facing a tight budget

The Athens City Council is expected to vote on the proposed budget and tax rate for the 2019 fiscal year Monday night.

The tax rate will stay the same as last year. That part was easy for the council.

City officials have been clear that the budgeting side of the equation hasn’t been as easy this cycle.

“We have a unique budget,” Mayor Monte Montgomery said recently. “It is really tight. We’ve had to really tighten our belts.”

Six-month old dies after being left in car

A six-month-old girl died Thursday after being left in a vehicle all day, and her father was charged with criminally negligent homicide after the mother filled out a sued being assisted by criminal lawyer Melbourne, according to Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse.

Jackson Tetrick, 24, of Brownsboro, was arrested in the parking lot of the Brownsboro Elementary School on State Highway 31 at 6:40 p.m.

According to family lawyer, he took his wife to her workplace and dropped off another child at the school Thursday morning. He said he returned to the family home, forgetting the infant was still in the car seat in the automobile.

Obituary: Timothy Scott Gilbert

Funeral services for Timothy Scott Gilbert of Mabank are scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens with Bro. Frank Upchurch officiating.

“Scotty” passed away September 5, 2018 in Longview, Texas.

Timothy Scott Gilbert was born October 24, 1967 in Dallas, Texas the son of Margaret Ann Moran Drummond. He was always a hard worker and for 20 plus years he worked as a foreman for the Gulf Shore TeleCom. In 2015 he left to become the owner and operator of Voltage Construction. He enjoyed traveling or taking cruises, hunting and cooking; especially for Chili cook-offs. He loved dancing and entertaining and was always the life of the party. “Papa” treasured spending time with his grandkids. He was a loving son, husband, father, a brother, uncle and grandfather that will be missed by all those who knew him.

Obituary: James Vernon Waggoner

James Vernon Waggoner made his last and final journey Saturday, September 1, 2018. James was 86 years old, born December 8, 1931, in Collinsville, TX, to Cecil Gervace Waggoner and Myrtle Priscilla Booher Waggoner. At age 10, he and his parents moved to Ft. Worth, TX, where he grew up, attended Birdville High School, graduating with honors, and Texas Wesleyan College, graduating cum laude. After college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served two years during the end of the Korean Conflict, stationed in Indianapolis, IN. After completing his military obligation he went to work for Amoco Production Co., working for 36 years as an auditor/investigator. He traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally. He was affectionately known as “Big Jim.”
