Carolyn Tyler is one of our county’s AgriLife Extension Agents and she is in charge of Family and Community Health and she also offers dementia & Alzheimers caregiving services. Here are some tips:

Get regular checkups. These are important even when you feel healthy. They help catch problems early, when they’re usually easiest to treat. It’s always a good idea to review your medications with your healthcare provider and pharmacist. If you ever feel dizzy or ear pains make sure you check this sonus complete review.

Exercise. Try to exercise at least 30 minutes most days a week. Exercise is good for your heart and improves strength and balance.

Quit tobacco. People who use tobacco (including smokeless tobacco) have a higher risk for heart attack, stroke, lung disease, and throat and mouth cancer. If you’re a tobacco user, quitting is the most important thing you can do right now to improve your health.

Eat healthy foods. Include fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your meals. Drink water and avoid sugary beverages.

Sheriff’s raid nets three dealers; chase ends with felon arrest

Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse’s Narcotics Investigators raided a Mabank home after midnight Monday and arrested three methamphetamine dealers.

Earlier in the day, they chased a wanted, armed felon across four East Texas Counties at high rates of speed, eventually capturing him after a foot pursuit.

“Our team here busted up a drug ring, and – working with other law enforcement officers – also got a wanted felon off the streets,” Hillhouse said.

Road Buzz: TxDOT Update for the Week of Nov. 5

TxDOT (Athens) Maintenance plans to continue edge repairs on SH 31E and FM 314N. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control at both locations.

Henderson County construction projects updates:

SH 31 Overlay Project

  • Limits: From FM 3204 east to 0.5 miles west of FM 315 in Chandler
  • Contractor: Big Creek Construction
  • Cost: $2.7 million
  • Anticipated Completion Date: Fall 2018

The contractor is scheduled to conduct hot mix operations as weather conditions allow. Ongoing work includes backfilling behind the guard fence mow strips. Expect daily lane closures. Watch for construction traffic exiting and merging throughout the project limits. The project consists of base repairs, mill and inlay, seal coat, surface hot mix, guardrail upgrades, and the installation of signs and pavement markings.

AEDC Community Development Grant provides $30,000 toward Fair Park stall replacement project

The Fair Park Complex was a recipient of AEDC’s Community Development Grant program, receiving matching grant funds toward a multi-year initiative to replace the aging stalls. Earlier this year, the Henderson County Regional Fair Park Complex applied for Athens Economic Development Corporation’s Community Development Grant, requesting grant funds to replace 40 stalls in the front barn, at a cost of $66,636. With this portion completed, AEDC board of directors ruled the project in compliance and awarded $30,000 in matching funds toward the stall replacement project.

Holiday concert benefits CASA

The Flying J Wranglers of Alto, NM, are the featured act for an upcoming concert that will kick off the Christmas season in East Texas.

A CASA Country Christmas, set for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, will benefit CASA of Trinity Valley, a nonprofit providing courtroom advocacy for children in foster care in Anderson, Cherokee and Henderson counties. The concert, CASA’s newest fundraiser, will be held at Living for the Brand Cowboy Church, 902 NE Loop 7 in Athens.
