Mildred Opal Smith Slaton was born on February 13, 1930 in Athens to William H. Smith and Maye Miller Smith Crossley. She passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 in Athens, Texas.
Mildred is survived by her sons: Odean Slaton and wife Peggy of Athens, David Slaton and wife Brenda of Rusk, Dennis Slaton and wife Michele of Jacksonville; sister: Rita Perry and husband Lloyd; brothers: Rex Crossley, Roland Crossley and wife Sharon, and Roy Glynne Smith and wife Charlene. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband Weldon Slaton; her son, Dale Slaton; brothers, Garvin Smith, Drayton Smith, and Waylen Crossley. She is also survived by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mildred was a gifted porcelain artist and was a member of the Porcelain Artist Guild of America. She also enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, gardening, and flower arranging. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Rusk.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 17, 2018, 2 p.m. at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Chapel in Athens with a visitation prior to the service at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Liberty Cemetery.
